Over Two-Thirds of Clairemont Elementary Participates in “Walk & Roll” Day

I am one of the Walk and Roll coordinators at Clairemont Elementary. We had about ~250 of the ~350 students participate in the Walk and Roll day by either walking or riding their bikes to school today. I thought this was newsworthy because of the rather incredible participation rate.
This is encouraging, on a day when an opinion piece in the WSJ questions Whatever Happened to Walking to School?
Nice work, Greg!
I can copy the piece and paste here. Is that breaking the rules (or the law?)
And wasn’t this author/topic addressed on this blog a while back?
Can the ” the rather incredible participation rate ” be attributed to demographic of Clairmont school where parents are available to accompany their children and the close proximity of the students to the school they attend? What are the numbers for other Decatur Schools?
About 70 kids walked at least 1 mile from the likes of the Housing Authority, Westchester, & Glennwood Estates/Forkner via walking school buses.
The demographics of the K-3 schools are nearly identical. They are all in close proximity to a large number of their students.
The crossing guard was standing in the middle of the street in front of the school as I biked by and commented on that . She said “there are no cars to watch out for today” and it was true, there was no car traffic What a cool thing.
I would say that Neil Norton deserves most of the credit.
Here is a link to that WSJ article:

I think we live in a special place and I have looked.
Neil Norton IS the driving force behind Clairemont’s popular Walk and Roll days. However, he gets precious little recognition because most of the Clairemont kids know him only as the “Bike Dude!” Here’s to you, Bike Dude! Thanks for all you do!
