“Sea of Spandex” at the Georgia Capitol

    Decatur Metro | March 23, 2010 | 1:34 pm

UPDATE: Commissioner Fred Boykin sends along a couple pics from yesterday’s event.

It’s not what you think.   The AJC reports…

More than 1,200 bicyclists converged on the state Capitol on Tuesday, urging lawmakers to approve a “safe passing” bill and to create more infrastructure for metro area cyclists.

Police-escorted groups of cyclists departed Decatur and Roswell, arriving in long, colorful columns in front of the Capitol just before noon. Decatur Mayor Bill Floyd and Roswell Mayor Jere Wood joined the ride, calling for passage of HB 988.

“Maybe someday the roads will be safe enough that we won’t need a police escort,” Wood said.

By noon the area in front of the Capitol steps was a sea of Spandex as bikers chanted “three-foot zone!”

As Commissioner Boykin mentioned in a comment last week, the referenced “three-foot zone” of H.B. 988 would establish a legally enforceable three-foot zone that motorists would have to obey when passing cyclists on the road.

If the legislation doesn’t pass at least one house by Friday, it will likely R.I.P. for this session.

This was a good day for a good ride for a good cause. Enjoyed seeing lots of neighbors on bikes.

Thanks to Mayor Floyd, organizer Fred Boykin, and a police escort the ride from East Lake MARTA Station was kept at a casual pace, good for riders of all levels of ability.

Yes, It was a really good event this year. Things went really smoothly and the weather turned out great towards the end. A big bunch of Glennwood students rode this year and the Decatur staff was extremely helpful in getting the start at E. Lake MARTA station off to a good start.

      Thanks to everyone who participated!

Sea of Spandex” at the Georgia Capitol

I was relieved to read that this misleading title was about bikers rather than chubby lobbyists and lawmakers.

I thought you were referring to the obscure 80s metal band reunion–attendance was very low again this year, but Rikki Rockett was awesome in his presentation to the insurance commission.

Then I thought, oh boy, will Eric be excited.

            Naaman,
I think Eric bolted. If I remember correctly, he got irritated with DM and said he was done posting. Or maybe he’s still around and will respond.

            Eric, you out there? Hello?

I was trying to call him out by implying that he was a Poison fan.

Update to the original post: Commissioner Fred Boykin sent along a couple of snapshots from the event.

First up, all the elected officials riding from the Decatur start point.

      Second up, Glennwood Academy represent!
