Five Emory Students Tied Up and Robbed at Gunpoint

March 2, 2010 | 10:05 am

From the Emory Wheel yesterday…

Five Emory students were robbed at gunpoint at their residence on North Druid Hills Road Thursday at approximately 2:30 a.m., according to DeKalb County Police Department reports.

According to police reports, two masked male subjects entered the residence at 2497 North Druid Hills Rd. with weapons and tied up the five individuals inside, all of whom have been confirmed as Emory students.

The two masked subjects ransacked the home during the next three hours and stole items such as televisions, laptops, an undetermined amount of cash and assorted valuables, according to the police report.

According to Mekka Parish, public information officer at DeKalb County Police Department, one of the students involved in the incident was struck with a gun by one of the intruders.

According to the Wheel, DeKalb Police do not believe that this was a “random event.”  Nevertheless, quite frightening.

    Any description on the perps?

The AJC said the front door through which they entered was not locked.

people should lock all doors, and preferrable have an alarm system w/at least one motion sensor; activate any time you are home, especially when alone!

sounds like an inside job to me!

I agree with James. Something is fishy.

Get the impression they were looking for something other than TVs?

Holding five young people at gun point while robbing and ransacking for three hours certainly begs some questions….

people should keep firearms handy and shoot masked intruders.

      Here we go…

I agree. I live near there, and even though its not a horrible neighborhood, I always keep a loaded firearm handy. It’s especially relevant to the case at hand where they think it was an “inside job”. Had the students been armed, the perps likely would have known this and the robbery probably would have never been attempted in the first place.

I must also give the disclaimer, however, that owning a gun is not sufficient. Everyone living there must also learn how to use it safely.

Don’t you think if it was an inside job–and they knew there was a gun in the house, there would be no witnesses?

        • Jimbo says:
          March 3, 2010 at 3:54 pm

No, I think the perps would have chosen to rob someone else that isn’t armed. The real power of a firearm is not shooting the intruder, it’s convincing them to go elsewhere. Even in a case where the intruder does not know you are armed, after you fire the first shot they’re likely to beat feet. Stealing a used TV is not worth getting shot.

      A serious question:
      1) Where in your home is a safe place to store a loaded gun? (If there was a masked intruder busting in your door, how would you get to it time?)

      • George American says:
        March 2, 2010 at 5:48 pm

        1) near the ammo. that is a safe place.

        2) by having the parlor and family gathering areas far enough away from the door that the intruder is busting.

Bedside table with the safety on. No kids in my house tho.

If you insist on leaving your door unlocked, the only safe place to keep your gun is in your hand.

I keep a shotgun hanging in the very back of my bedroom closet. It’s suffiently hidden so that if I were to be robbed I feel confident it wouldn’t be seen and stolen, and it’s safetied in such a way that noone can accidently discharge it.

So don’t yall get any ideas.

AJC report the perps have been arrested:
