Car-Free Day: Excuses, Excuses…

September 19, 2008 | 2:10 pm

Dan Magee writes in with word that next Wednesday, September 24th is Car-Free Day in Decatur.  Not only does that mean the ultra-obvious, but it also means a Blue Sky Concert on the Square at noon!

Unfortunately that also means I can’t participate.  Though I am now taking the MARTA train to work at least once a week, Wednesdays are the one weekday when “no car” makes “no sense” for me.  So, I guess I’ll have to make Tuesday my official Car-Free day and just duck below the dash as I burn fossil fuels past the mayor’s house on Wednesday.

Hopefully I don’t miss any car-free dance parties that spontaneously break out on the MARTA platform.  That would really burn my biscuits.

Full release with details after the jump…

WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 24th is CAR FREE DECATUR DAY!

On Wednesday, Sept. 24th, please consider walking or biking to work. Or walk or bike to the 12 pm Blue Sky Concert on the Square, brought to you by Decatur Business Association and SunTrust Bank. Enjoy music from the Buddy O’Reilly Band. Learn about commuting options from the Clean Air Campaign. Learn about the Safe Routes to School program sponsored by Decatur Active Living, and about our various programs and other events.

The first Car Free Day in Decatur was held Wednesday, September 22, 2004. The Mayor proclaimed it Car Free Day and invited the community to join him at the Community Bandstand during the Blue Sky Concert for the celebration. Folks were encouraged to make a commitment to reduce their automobile use that day – including riding a bike to work, walking to the store, walking to the Blue Sky Concert, sharing a ride with friends, neighbors or co-workers, and/or riding the bus or MARTA train. Car-Free Day aims to reduce excessive automobile use for one day out of the year, and to remind the community that the automobile is not the only way to make many kinds of trips.
