Old Tyler Perry Studio in Inman Park Being Converted to House “West Coast Market”

    Decatur Metro | November 19, 2012 | 10:59 am

Oh Decatur, where are your defunct movie studio spaces to do these sorts of things?  Wheatley we-ports…

An Atlanta developer plans to transform Tyler Perry’s old production facility and warehouse near the Atlanta Beltline’s Eastside Trail into a mixed-use development centered around a 12,000 square-foot, west coast-style marketand restaurants. The redevelopment, titled Krog Street Market, would eventually include housing on the complex’s south end.Paces Properties in late October closed on several adjacent parcels in Inman Park near the Beltline, including: the Stove Works, the vibrant dining and office complex; Tyler Perry’s old 66,000 square-foot studio at the intersection of Krog Street and Lake Avenue; and several smaller adjacent parcels. According to commercial real-estate research firm Databank, Paces paid $13.4 million for the combined nine acres.

Well, at least it’ll be accessible via quick trip on MARTA followed by a short walk until someone dreams up and funds that Inman Park to Decatur streetcar line!

A biker, a jogger and a car driver race from Inman Park to Piedmont Park. The biker and jogger use the new Beltline trail, while the driver takes to the streets. A cool little comparison courtesy of Fox5.

    Decatur icons and landmarks

    Andisheh Nouraee | April 26, 2010 | 8:40 am

Area festival goers may be familiar with the illustrators Sherry and Larry Paulsen. The Paulsens make and sell brightly colored illustrations of local landmarks throughout the Southeast. They’re perfect festival fodder because they express the same love and enthusiasm for community that draws so many to our neighborhood festivals in the first place.

For Metro Atlanta, the Paulsens have created iconic images of the metro-wide landmarks like The Fox Theatre, the Varsity, and the Big Chicken (among others) – as well as hyperlocal landmarks like Inman Parks Trolley Barn and the Tudor-style commercial district in Avondale Estates.

Browsing their collection of prints yesterday at the Inman Park Festival, my wife and I noticed they didn’t have any prints depicting Decatur. Larry Paulsen told me the slight isn’t intentional. They simply haven’t been able to come up with a singular, iconic image for Decatur. He’s considering, he says, an image of Agnes Scott (the college, not the woman) and Eddie’s Attic. He then gave me his business card and asked to let him know if had any suggestions.

So I’m addressing the mob – name some Decatur buildings or streetscapes worthy of devotional iconography? Eddie’s? Agnes? CVS? Okay, maybe not CVS.

(Post by Andisheh Nouraee, filling-in for Mr. DM)

    Oxendine Wants “Greener” Roads

    Decatur Metro | September 5, 2009 | 12:10 pm

The Ox has responded to an outraged Inman Park.   Hot out of the Fresh Loaf oven…

“I love East Atlanta, Morningside, Grant Park, Inman Park and that entire wonderful part of our great state,” said Oxendine. “But I know we must find a way to move Georgia forward towards “greener” roads, mass transit, light rail—every option must be on the table.”

I can only assume he means covering all the roads in sod, but that sounds rather expensive.

As Wheatley points out in his analysis of the statement, though there’s little chance this bypass would ever be built, it’s win-win for the Ox, who already has little support on the blue-tinted east side of the metro.  Pissing off Atlanta earns major brownie points with the rest of the state.  Politicking at its finest.

Too bad it doesn’t work the other way around…”Hey rest o’ Georgia, Atlanta needs all your property to create a massive metro parking lot!”

Inman Park is Pissed at John Oxendine

    Decatur Metro | September 1, 2009 | 2:49 pm

Inman Park isn’t mincing words about gubenatorial candidate John Oxendine’s proposal of building more bypasses and highways around Atlanta.  CL’s Thomas Wheatley has the note to the candidate from Inman Park President Lisa Burnette.

The idea has obviously picked open the old scab that Inman Park has worn since a coalition of in-town neighborhoods defeated the plan of connecting the road with the most laughable 35mph speed limit sign in the city (Freedom Parkway) with Highway 78.

Now in politics, pissing people off is kind of inevitable.  But pissing off people with money?  Oh, that’s bad.  Very bad.

These Atlanta neighborhoods, including Inman Park, most soundly defeated this highway proposal decades ago, at a time when they had little organization and little resources. Today, we are highly organized and closely networked. We have neighbors and friends in many high places, and we have a lot of money, set aside specifically to protect ourselves against these kinds of proposals.

The Inman Park Neighborhood Association demands that you immediately retract your statements that you would consider building a Stone Mountain Freeway through intown Atlanta.

    Hells yes.

Hey Inman Park, let Decatur know if you need help.  We don’t have quite the wealth-hoards, but we’re feisty and we’ll volunteer for near about anything.
