They have oyster po’boys on the menu! Yay!
Interesting that crawfish is absent from the menu, but that could be a good thing. Better to not have it at all if you can’t secure a reliable source for a quality ingredient. Same goes for oysters, so fingers crossed.
Recently had lunch at Parkway Bakery & Tavern, “The oldest and tastiest poor boy shop anywhere,” overlooking Bayou St. John in New Orleans. In 1929, Bennie and Clovis Martin created the sandwich to help feed the striking streetcar conductors: “What are we going to feed these poor boys?” The original sandwich consisted of potatoes and maybe a drizzle of roast beef gravy. Shared a hot roast beef and a fried shrimp poor boy. Very good!
Yes, Parkway is someplace we’ve been meaning to get. Was on the itinerary when we were down there in February, but with four small kids in tow, plans changed. 😉 But I’ve had po boys at at least 8 different places in NOLA. Up until recently my platonic ideal was Domilise’s down there, but the ones we had last time were overpriced and underwhelming. Honestly, since Crawfish Shack began shipping in Leidenheimer bread, they’ve become my benchmark for po boys. Hard to beat the freshness of their seafood and their killer remoulade.
Wow. DecaturMetro didn’t crash my iPad today!!!
Seems like since the site redo, things have really died down here.
