Has anyone heard anything about “Day of Rage?” Apparently Anonymous is calling for this tonight at 7 pm at the Decatur courthouse. I haven’t seen it covered by any local news sources but it’s floating around social media.

I’ve had a couple of people warn me about this so I looked it up and found this at Snopes: http://www.snopes.com/2016/07/11/anonymous-day-of-rage-protests-2016/. Summary: probably a hoax.

For anyone interested, a fund has been set up for the folks on S. McDonough who lost their home to fire yesterday. Consider contributing here:

Thanks, that’s wonderful that the community is pulling together for this family with children. Has anyone seen a fund set up yet for the family of the deacon who was a Decatur resident and murdered recently?

        • Dan Whisenhunt says:
          July 15, 2016 at 10:52 am

I have been reaching out to the family to see if they are interested in establishing one after receiving messages from readers. I have sent messages to Lt. Jennifer Ross and Housing Authority Director Doug Faust. So far I have received no response. Lt. Ross said she would pass the request along to the wife of the victim. If she gets in touch with me, I will put her in touch with folks who have expressed an interest in helping her.

      Neighbors –

As many of you know, one of our Oakhurst families (Craig, Jessie, Henry and August “Boots” Hadley) lost their home to a fire yesterday. The fire at this time is of unknown origin. Sadly their home is likely a total loss and nearly everything tangible has been destroyed. Thankfully the Hadley family was on vacation at the time of the fire, and those who were staying in their home at the time of the fire were not injured.

The Hadleys are a very big part of our community and they would be ones out in front helping any of us if the situation were reversed.

A GoFundMe fund to bridge the gap and cover immediate necessary and miscellaneous expenses ranging from temporary housing to replacing immediate needs such as food, clothing and shelter that they will undoubtedly need in the coming days and weeks. To donate: https://www.gofundme.com/hadleyfirerelief

Any donation is greatly appreciated as well as the sharing of this link to those you know in and around our Decatur community. Those close to the Hadley’s will also be establishing a way local for children to help donate toys, clothing, and books to the Hadley’s young boys that may ease their sense of loss.

Many thanks for all of your wonderful Decatur family support and love during this difficult time.

      Brian Smith

It appears the improvements to the PATH from Clarkston to Stone Mountain have begun. It will be interesting to see how they handle crossing over 285.

Now if we could just get more cyclists to use it, that would be a huge improvement.

      • New Scott says:
        July 15, 2016 at 11:15 am

I’m excited to hear this! The PATH is pretty great except for that part. We kinda like that it’s not heavily used because it makes for wide open space for us. 🙂 But I agree with you and hope people start enjoying it.

      • Sam says:
        July 15, 2016 at 2:16 pm

I am an aspiring road cyclist and I cannot figure out the best way to get onto PATH from where two exit points from where I live:

        Dekalb Industrial at Scott Blvd
        N. Decatur at Jordan Lane

Proper maps for it are hard to find. I’d like to be able to hook up to it and ride up to stone mountain if possible.

        • Ww says:
          July 15, 2016 at 2:32 pm

It runs on the sidewalk along the South side of E.Ponce from Sam’s crossing to where Dekalb Industrial crosses. You turn at the Marta yard up the hill. You cross the tracks and turn left at the Marta tracks. It comes out on Church St. in Clarkston. There are some short street sections mixed with dedicated Path as you head out to Stone Mountain. Its confusing until the other side of Clarkston.

Anyone interested in a free Tai Chi class? My neighbor Steve will be leading a group every Saturday at 7:30 AM, at the green space on Trinity and Commerce. It’s a lovely shaded park that may go up for sale to developers. 🙁

      Here’s more info: http://eastlakeneighborhood.org/free-tia-chi-lessons/

      • Scott says:
        July 15, 2016 at 12:50 pm

Agreed that it’s a lovely spot but note that its potential sale is something planned by the DHA to help fund their ongoing mission of providing low-income housing in Decatur. I don’t believe they’ve limited potential buyers to developers. Anyone interested in buying it would, I’d imagine, be welcome.

I went to Tai Chi this morning on the green and at the end, they mentioned that the space is being sold by Decatur Housing Authority and while City of Decatur is interested, it is not a done deal. In my opinion, this definitely needs to happen. I seem to remember something about this space being the new location for the Decatur Farmer’s Market when the overhaul of the Ebster buildings was complete. That guy who was agitating for the City to buy the BoA property and turn it into a park needs to take this on. It is a lovely space that could be even lovelier.

Actually, I think the Decatur Farmer’s Market was supposed to relocate to the plaza in between the Ebster Center, DPD, and CSOD, but that plan went by the wayside AFAIK.

Does anyone have experience working with any of the refugee agencies in Clarkson? If so, any recommendations as to how to get involved – particularly in working directly with the families being resettled – would be great.

My friend Kim Goldsmith used to work with a refugee agency setting up homes for families. I’m sure she can put you in touch with someone. [email protected]

The Refugee Family Literacy Program in Clarkston is a great program: mommyandmefamilyliteracy.com. Whether it has volunteer opportunities I’m not sure but, if it doesn’t, I’ll bet the staff could put you in touch with others that do.

Friends of Refugees operates out of the Clarkston International Bsptist Church. FOR sponsors a job assistance service, the Internet Cafe; Mommy and Me which offers daycare and early learning for children while their mothers learn English; sewing classes for older women and a store which sells merchandise made there; a pregnancy counseling service which helps refugee mothers navigate the health care system through birth; and a community garden which grows produce for consumption and sale. Log onto http://www.friendsoftefugees.com for more information about the organization and how to volunteer.

The IRC https://www.rescue.org/united-states/atlanta-ga is running many programs in Clarkston. They often need volunteers to work as assistants for ESL courses and in many other areas. You can read all about the opportunities on their website (along with the scheduled volunteer hours).

I have been volunteering with New American Pathways since last year and think they are great. I did volunteer with the IRC in CA several years ago but when I went to their orientation they did not have hands on type volunteering that I was looking for or times for working folks. I have helped set up an apartment for a refugee family and have continued visiting with them each week. We go grocery shopping, practice English, etc. They have many opportunities to work directly with families. They are small enough to feel you are really making a difference. As I meet more refugees I hear more and more good things about New American Pathways. Feel free to reach out if you would like more information.
