Decatur Square Lawn Refurbishment Begins Wednesday

    Decatur Metro | July 12, 2016 | 11:09 am

The City of Decatur sent out this release late yesterday…

Construction to refurbish the two lawn areas to the east of the Community Bandstand in downtown Decatur will begin Wednesday, July 13, 2016.  The amount of pedestrian foot traffic across the lawn compacts the roots of the grass and keeps it from growing.

The City of Decatur has hired Plants, a local company, to install a new pervious system that allows the grass to grow through it while at the same time reducing the stress on the roots.

The construction area will be fenced off during the two week installation project and the two grassed areas will be fenced through the end of August to allow the new sod to get established.  The project also includes additional landscaping designed to encourage pedestrians to stick to the sidewalks and use the lawn for passive recreation rather than using it as a shortcut.

Has there ever been an estimate of the cost of either shifting or extending the gazebo opening so that it faces the “long part” of the lawn instead of facing the “short porch” towards the old courthouse? It seems to me that our concerts on the square would work better if musicians faced the area with the most people.

I too have always been baffled by this. I can’t believe the Gazebo predates the plaza (but I could be wrong)

The gazebo’s about twenty years old but it definitely came long after the plaza which was built in 1979.

It would be great if someone took the initiative to present ideas to the City. Maybe even get a local architect to draw up some concepts.

Perfect time of the year to get grass to grow.

Decatur is waiting for the McMansion House Festival vs the Tiny House Festival.
Decatur people will pay more for the McMansion Weekend Tour as soon as some one can get several buses for it.

Great advantage of a McMansion House Festival is that the tiny houses could be shown inside.
