I was having a conversation yesterday about this new stop sign with a commuter who is travelling east on Oakview in the mornings. Her comment that people won’t see the sign with school busses there gave me pause.
That’s a great point, and I wonder whether having a stop sign increases the danger of the intersection inasmuch as pedestrians will rely on it — but drivers can’t see it.
there are two stop signs on each side of the road…this one will most definitely be blocked by busses
but the other one will remain visible…there is also striping and STOP painted in the street
Well if there’s a school bus there, aren’t people supposed to stop anyway?
Or are you talking about morning/afternoon dropoff/pickup. I’m not familiar with this particular intersection.
The buses “stage” along the curb to drop off and later to pickup. This is a lane situation and no bus stop signs are extended. Drivers are free to pass but certainly should use caution. No students are crossing away from the curb (right) side of the bus as they move to/from the building.

I think the bright yellow “NEW” is going to help regular drivers realize that there’s now a stop sign there.
I think that may have been a neighborhood added addition.
I figured; it didn’t look like DOT issue. But I think it will help. When drivers have a routine, it can take them a while to develop new habits. The “NEW” might help. It would be even better if it blinked.

The “NEW” sign was designed by Lena Stevens, Project Manager for Decatur Public Works and installed by City staff.

This likely sets a precedent that all city signage from this point forward should feature a delightful folk art sensibility. Someone get on that.
