Decatur: Why Not Try On Some Polka-Dots?

pokadots

Just like my zigzag-lines-approaching-intersection “campaign” many years ago, I’m sure there are all kinds of technical reasons why we can’t do this.

But don’t you think many Decatur intersections could use some low-cost, polka-dotted curb-extensions like these newly painted ones in Austin, Texas?

They were inspired by “various parklet and pedestrian plaza projects in New York City and Los Angeles.”, according to CityLab.

Columbia Ventures has put up new renderings of the Avondale MARTA station mixed use development dubbed “E. Co Decatur”  – an abbreviation of “East College” – on its website.

The site notes that the project will commence this year on the 7.7 acre tract and include 228 market-rate units, a 92 unit senior affordable housing “component”, 22,000 square feet of commercial space, and a 728 space parking deck.  The description also notes that the project will connect to the under-construction East Decatur Greenway.

As for future phases, Columbia states its planning a “mixed use outparcel, an expansion potential for the multifamily, and a site for the City Schools of Decatur Early Childhood Learning Center.”

Iberian Pig Owners Opening Pizza & Pasta Restaurant in Old Ink & Elm Space in Emory Village

The Atlanta Business Chronicle is reporting that the Castellucci Hospitality Group, which owns the popular Iberian Pig restaurant in downtown Decatur, is moving their Sandy Springs restaurant, Double Zero Napoletana, into the giant, vacant Ink & Elm space in Emory Village.   Ink & Elm closed back in May 2015.

Here’s a bit of info about the new spot from ABC…

Castellucci Hospitality Group plans to move its southern Italian restaurant Double Zero from its location on Roswell Road to Emory Village. The restaurant that serves handmade pasta and Neapolitan pizza will take the former Ink & Elm space on North Decatur Road.

As part of the move, Double Zero plans to revamp its menu with new small plates and larger, shareable dishes. Executive chef Edwin Molina will continue to lead the kitchen.

ABC reports that the restaurant is expected to reopen in June.

In Creative Loafing’s “Ultimate Pizza Smackdown” Double Zero’s “Classico” pizza ranked #8 among Atlanta ‘zas.  In that same smackdown, Decatur Sapori di Napoli’s “Green Machine” ranked #5.  O4W Pizza’s Grandma Pie was #1.
