Answering Your “When Will ________ Open at Suburban Plaza?!” Questions
Decatur Metro | December 7, 2015 | 8:53 am
Now that Walmart and LA Fitness have opened at Suburban Plaza, there’s renewed curiosity regarding the opening dates for other planned businesses in the renovated plaza.
Lucky for us, between Decaturish and the Medlock Neighborhood website, we can scrounge up relatively recent proposed opening dates for most of the plaza’s businesses.
We shall summarize. First, the updates with a Decaturish link…
- LA Fitness – Open / Starbucks with a drive-thru – under construction
- Louisiana Bistreaux Cajun restaurant – June 2016
- Half Price Books – Spring 2016
And now a list of projected opening dates, based on MANA’s recent, handy post.
- Comet Pub and Lanes – MANA is guessing Spring 2016 for an opening date and adds “short summer leagues in 2016, full leagues by fall.” (Comet has also been posting some delicious looking potential menu options on their Facebook page, if you want to drive yourself a little crazy in the meantime.)
- HomeGoods – March 2016
- JoAnn Fabrics – March 2016
- Ross Dress for Less – June 20116

FYI
In line at Walmart, I was told their “system” was not set up for selling beer/wine on Sundays yet. They didn’t know when it would be fixed. After I was revived, I suggested they turn off the beer case lights or hang up a sign.
And I know, I know: there are 12,000 better places to get beer around here. But those places don’t have Christmas lights and landscaping supplies and cleaning stuff and dog food and paint and pajamas and…
The book store survives! I really don’t have a preference on the format I read; either digital or paper is fine. But what I miss is the browsing experience, where a book cover can catch my eye, and I end up discovering a jewel.
Yes, I know we have B & N, Eagle Eye and LSOS. And I do spend money and time at all. But to see NEW bookstores opening up after years of “experts” proclaiming the death of the brick and mortar bookstore…that’s just great news all around.
+1 — I miss browsing for books as well, so am excited about a new nearby bookstore
have you checked out Cover Books on the westside? more art/food/travel type books than novels, but a great shop.
No, I haven’t. Of course, art, food, and travel aren’t really interests of mine. 🙂
I guess my main point was that new book stores are being built.
There is also an excellent “secret” bookstore tucked into the Carlos Museum at Emory. It’s not your typical museum store. There are lots of interesting and obscure titles on art and history and your purchases support the museum. Buy local, support non profit!
It’s a shame that stores like Ross, Home Goods and the supporting characters could not have found a place in downtown. They would help draw more shoppers downtown and provide some synergy for the local businesses and restaurants. Retailers seem stuck on free parking and the number of vehicles passing by. How can Decatur’s economic development staff counter those criteria?
driven mostly by curiosity, i made a visit today.
my primary impression is: it takes a village to fill a Walmart.
though they’ve done some clever architectural slight of hand to diminish the perception of its size from the street, once inside, reality strikes—it’s yuuuuge.
must admit there’s something to be said about its one-stop-shoppiness, but my appreciation of that feature was tempered by my mild nausea about its commentary on our materialism.
