Coming on the heels of what was by all accounts a pretty darn good time, your trusty Porchfest organizing crew has now nailed down the date for next year’s v. 2.0 — putting to rest any lingering questions as to whether or not Porchfest would continue.
Mark your calendar now: Saturday, October 8, 2016.
“Whah?” you say. “What happened to following the Beer Festival?” Well, as it turns out, the Beer Fest chews up considerable overtime on the part of our police and sanitation folks. So much in fact that, especially due to DPD time-on/time-off rules, we had a hard time wrangling up what we needed this year. If Porchfest has any expectation of growing over time, this challenge will only get more difficult. Better that we nip it now.
Fortunately, Oakhurst has an established weekend for the celebration of music and art — the second weekend in October — which has traditionally featured the neighborhood’s yearly festival. So moving into that slot was a decision that practically made itself.
But why not Sunday, the 9th, to keep that mellow vibe? We certainly considered that but ultimately had to acknowledge the fact that October 8 and 9 are also Pride weekend. Given the competition for interest, we decided our best bet was not going up against Sunday’s parade, as that seems to be the weekend’s biggest draw.
Lots more things are currently in the planning stage: Event hours; scheduling approach; more food; how art can play a larger role; etc. Stay tuned for future updates or maintain your position on the front lines of information by clicking through and liking the Oakhurst Porchfest Facebook page.

Yay! Congrats on the success of the event, and I’m looking forward to the next entry!
I am confused by the writing of the article. Are they saying that Decatur Beer Fest is no longer happening next year?
We piggybacked on Beer Fest weekend this year, taking Sunday to their Saturday. We won’t be doing that next year for the reasons mentioned.
Right, we were able to do both last year. We attended DBF on Saturday then Porchfest on Sunday, it was a great weekend. I understand the desire to move to Saturday and it makes sense. Just was trying to understand the wording of the article in relation to the other event was all.
I have to say, one thing that the Porchfest got right was the amazing program that they produced with color coded, easy to navigate map and schedule. Saw everyone looking at their phones and going to their next event and I don’t know how this would have worked without such a well designed and well thought out program. Organizers in general knew what they were doing and you would have never known it was a first-ever event. So again, kudos to you all!!
Thanks. I tried to clarify the wording.
Thank you for scheduling this already. It has just been added to the 2016 household calendar.
