Chris got up bright and early this morning to check out the new Walmart at Suburban Plaza on Opening Day.  After the jump, check out variety of the pics he sent in with some captions.

      Yup, looks like a WalMart.

There’s something wrong with that first picture.

Oh yeah, I see the problem. The sidewalk is dry. I’d forgotten what that looks like.

Anyone know when Home Goods opens? I see they have a sign up

(Thank goodness I washed my car yesterday! :0)

Super pleased with how the store turned out! Every department seems to have a good assortment of merchandise. And I sure do welcome the return of convenient shopping within easy walking distance!

Wait a minute. Why are all these people at this retail establishment? I thought most everyone in Decatur hated WM? Must be postal Decaturites.

They’re the same people who shop at YDFM despite its rape of the surrounding landscape.

Some of us postal Decatur people don’t have the irrational adoration of YDFM :) (at least this household)

Eh-hem. Since you brought our “household” into this…. While I agree that as a Decatur household we don’t love YDFM — between the anti-bag policy and the fishy-smelling cheese and the gamble on whether the milk will be spoiled — I say that we are not “postal Decatur people”. If we were, we’d be paying less in taxes… Right Steve?

            • Steve says:
              November 11, 2015 at 3:21 pm

              Roger that.

              Oops.

One can argue that tax-paying Decatur is geographically an inclusive subset of postal Decatur, even if common usage disagees loudly :) I typed before thinking.

You continue to attempt to conflate these two occurrences. Last time you wondered why people were mad at one but not the other. Now you seem to be saying these same people are mad at neither. What gives?

There’s a Walmart at Suburban? Why didn’t somebody say something?

I heard it was going to be a Trader Joes. :(

My favorite rationalization for shopping at Walmart (author unknown): Since I have to pay for food stamps and Medicare coverage for Walmart employees, the only way I can get some of my money back is to shop there.

      • Bill W says:
        November 11, 2015 at 5:23 pm

My mistake–I meant Medicaid, not Medicare.

        • Crambone says:

Don’t worry, that person is paying for Medicare too.

I went tonight. It wasn’t full, but pretty busy. They’re still putting on the finishing touches, but apart from that they’re really humming along.

This isn’t the writer’s room at SNL, Daydreamer. Just a buncha regular people talking.

If they build it you will shop at it. It is just a matter of time. You will buy something from this Walmart even if you live in the City of Decatur. City of Decatur people were already buying stuff from the Walmart on Memorial before this one was built. Even the people who put up “Stop Walmart” signs eventually shop at Walmart.
