There should be a law against Christmas decorations before Thanksgiving.
Yup, that’s a Serial Mom offense, I believe.
I don’t understand the hostility toward Christmas. This isn’t the first place I’ll see it, whether it’s griping about decorations being up or about Christmas music being so ubiquitous and oppressive. Isn’t it supposed to be a happy holiday that people like? I don’t get it.
But what do I know. I’m Jewish. I freak out if I’m lucky enough to see a menorah barely visible in someone’s front window. I mean, I’m at the point where I call “White Christmas” a Hanukkah song because it was written by a Jewish guy.
Point is, appreciate the fact that basically the whole country celebrates with you and goes out of their way to do it early and often. That’s pretty awesome.
I actually agree with Moose. It’s nothing against Christmas, and I do get that it saves the City $$ by having them up early–it’s just that I really miss having distinct Thanksgiving & Christmas seasons. I’m not so much into the HallowThanksMas thing.
On the positive side, the merkins haven’t made an appearance! 😉
Yep the holiday decorations are going up and yes they are a week earlier than expected but it takes time to get them up — especially since our network of streetscape improvements and street lamps has expanded. I know there are those who will be unhappy but in the end, the festive lights are beautiful now that the days are getting shorter. Hopefully we can agree with Crambone that the lights are lovely and just enjoy them. Decatur’s Terrific Thursday events kick off this Thursday night with lots of new programs and activities. Crambone, please note that the third annual lighting of the Grand Menorah is scheduled for Thursday, December 10th on the Square. Hope to see you there. Check out the latest Decatur Focus for a listing of all our holiday events and watch as the city is slowly transformed for the holidays over the next few weeks.
There you go with the slippery slope of beauty, Lyn. Sure, first it’s beautiful decorations but then what? Affection? Compassion? Good will towards men?
OUTRAGE!
Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together, mass hysteria!
Bring back the merkins!
I, for one, welcome our new illuminated overlords…
Agreed with Crambone. I am ready! I fully embrace the anticipation, especially of colder temperatures. I’ve had enough with the heat. I love this season and I really don’t care if we start celebrating it today. For me it’s all wrapped up together–Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s–and although I won’t start listening to Christmas music until the day after Thanksgiving, I really don’t mind seeing the world getting ready for it. After all, I started my Christmas shopping ages ago!
in downtown Decatur of course . . .
Humbug.
Frankly, I think we should have decorative lights up from the time we set the clocks back to somewhere around late February, be they in honor of late Halloween, early Christmas, overambitious Thanksgiving or whatever you want to attribute them to. Late fall and winter are dark, cold, and frequently dreary, and having some twinkly lights up helps make things a bit more cheery.
Couldn’t agree more!
Great idea!!
Don’t fret! We leave the lights in the trees until early March but alas, the wreaths will come down in early January.
