Decatur Book Festival Names New Program Director, Julie Wilson

The Decatur Book Festival released this announcement this afternoon…

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Decatur Book Festival Presented by DeKalb Medical (AJC DBF) has named Julie Wilson as program director. Previously, Wilson served as assistant program director for AJC DBF and becomes the fourth person to have served in that role.

A North Carolina native, Wilson discovered her love of books from her mother, who was an elementary school librarian. Wilson succeeds Philip Rafshoon as program director. Tom Bell was the inaugural program director of the book festival and is an AJC DBF co-founder. Terra Elan McVoy also served as program director.

“Working with Julie over the past year, I’ve been floored by both her professional skills and by the great work she did with authors and publicists,” AJC DBF Executive Director and Co-founder Daren Wang said. “She learned the ropes under Philip and I can’t think of anyone better suited to build on his legacy. Programming the festival requires a person with a blend of practical knowledge and an innate curiosity and I can’t imagine anyone better suited than Julie.”

Wilson had come to the AJC DBF from the American Cancer Society, where she spent nearly seven years managing customer feedback and process improvement, measuring and evaluating customer experiences and developing marketing communications programs.

Grocery Store Now “Unlikely” at Callaway Site

callawayrendering

We had high hopes that we might get another grocery store in Downtown Decatur with the mixed-use development at the Callaway property, across from City Hall along Trinity Place.

But the recent disagreement between the city – who acquired the site a couple of years ago from DeKalb County – and the developer, Cousins, about what the market can support and what’s physically possible on the slanted site seems to have resulted in begrudging agreement that a grocery store isn’t possible at that location, according to a new blurb on AJC.com…

Decatur wants more ground-floor retail, though a grocery—or at least a full-sized grocery—seems unlikely given the topography and layout makes it difficult for large delivery trucks.

Le sigh.  The blurb also notes that the city would like some upper-floor office space in the development, since the last time an office building was constructed in Decatur was back before the Olympics in 1991.

Seems the development appetite is still mostly in luxury rentals, which is the case all over Atlanta. A recent GA Tech study found that a large majority of the 11,000 apartments being built and the 9,000 planned are these “luxury rentals”.  At the same time, low-cost rentals are disappearing.

Halloween Flashbacks – Decatur Style

It’s almost Halloween, so why not take a look back at some of the Halloween-related stories here on DM from over the years…

Back in the early days of this site, I apparently posted random pictures from People.com of dogs dressed for Halloween.  This was a pre-“Facebook rules in the internet” era, so these types of posts actually brought in a few eyeballs.  Keep reading though, it gets a bit more Decatur-centric in subsequent years…

Who remembers Moey’s Candy Voting Machine costume from 2008 and how it went sorta global?  In 2009, Moey hit the streets as internet sensation Keyboard Cat, and that post ended up being DM’s most-viewed ever for a couple of years.

Does anyone else recall this awesome Halloween poster from 2009 by famed, local tattoo artist Russ Abbott?
