DeKalb Boil Water Advisory Still In Effect

In case you’re wondering, due to lack of updates today. From DeKalb County just a few mins ago…
DeKalb County announces the precautionary boil water advisory that was issued countywide on Saturday, July 25 is still in effect.
DeKalb Watershed Management sampled 20 water sites on Friday, July 24 and water 40 sites Saturday, July 25, which all showed negative for bacteria. Fifty water sites were sampled on Sunday, July 26, and those results are expected today.
As part of the county’s emergency response, sampling is conducted for both public safety assurance and to stay ahead of any regulatory requirements, following a decrease in water pressure to the system.
The loss in pressure experienced by DeKalb County residents during the weekend was a result of a break in a 48-inch transmission main approximately 20 feet underground in an area with gas, power and other utilities present. These obstacles required substantial coordination and care.
DeKalb Watershed Management maintains 3,200 miles of water lines and 2,600 miles of sewer lines.

^This is so typical for Charles Lambert. All about laying blame at someone else’s feet instead of fixing the problem. So frustrating. We deserve better, DeKalb!!

So College Heights, which was open today, announced a short time ago that they would be closed tomorrow due to water quality concerns. The rumbling is they had access to the test results that haven’t been released publicly yet, and they are bad.
Like how bad? What contaminants? Microbes, heavy metals, sediment? Very curious…
Don’t say this if you can’t back it up with some facts!
The fact is I was logging on to post the same thing lump did. The county health dept. closed the school(s).
I can’t find a link. Where did you see this? Not saying you’re wrong, just haven’t seen.

Now, this could just mean that the school wanted to go ahead and make an open/closed decision so people can make arrangements for tomorrow… nothing in there about them knowing the results will be bad.

But where does it say that the test results are bad and those test results are what is closing the school?
How long does it really take to test water samples? I imagine this is something that could be accomplished in a matter of hours. Anyone have any idea what is really involved in that process?
I was about to ask the same thing. I presume it involves growing bacteria in a Petrie dish and requires the passage of some time. Any of you CDC or Emory scientific types out there know anything authoritatively?
Honestly, the lack of a highly visible response by the top levels of county government (i.e, the CEO) is just amazing to me. This isn’t exactly the zombie apocalypse, but it is a very serious situation that is having a significant economic impact on many businesses and workers and is at a minimum creating a lot of anxiety, inconvenience and stress for a lot of people. I would expect to see Lee May in front of the cameras a couple times a day assuring us that everything possible is being done and telling us when it will be over. Instead, we get occasional, anonymous press releases and snarky Twitter messages. We need to remember this at election time.
At this point, I am surprised we haven’t heard anything from COD leadership either. If it weren’t for DM, neither my home nor my work would have a clue about this.
For what its worth, the CDS College Heights Early Learning Center will be closed tomorrow due to the water problem. A school official told me, as I was picking up my daughter this afternoon, that the County had called CSD and said that their tests had come back positive for some types of bacteria. That is, of course, hearsay, but they closed the school.

It does make you wonder what changed to cause the school to close. It was open Monday and closed Tuesday. Weird.
CH was already closed Wed – Fri this week. Although I don’t believe this to be true, I can’t help but to wonder if a certain contingent at the school wanted some additional time without children. If the tests result weren’t available until approx. 7PM, why did the schools decide to close a few hours before? What was the justification?
The schools were forced to shut down by the sanitation dept. It’s unclear if it was due to the test results yesterday or if they were unable to keep boiling water.
If it is the former, DeKalb Co. is lying to the public at large about clean test results. And there is no need for the latter if the water is clean. So, I would like to know why the sanitation dept. and/or CSD decided to close the schools. Something doesn’t add up here. If is was in an abundance of caution, just say so. (and then we can all start complaining about the schools being closed way too early for no reason)
I agree. Something doesn’t add up. Which is why I have my kids drinking bottled water still.
