Atlanta Applies for Grant to Extend Streetcar To Beltline
Decatur Metro | June 19, 2015 | 12:28 pmYou all hear about this yet?
The Saporta Report is reporting that the City of Atlanta has applied for a $29.3 million federal TIGER grant to extend the Atlanta Streetcar to the Beltline at Irwin Street.
The application states that the total cost of the 1.8 mile track round trip would be $65.4 million, which would include the cost for two new streetcars and two new stations – one along Edgewood and one on Irwin Street.
For lots more info on the application and streetcar plans, read the full Saporta article. Grants are due to be awarded in mid-October.

I will be interested to see how the Beltline crosses Irwin Street when the east line is extended towards DeKalb Av. It is a mess now, with no obvious traffic control other than crosswalk signs. (Wishful thinking.)
Adding a Streetcar to the traffic mix on Irwin is going to complicate things, though having this public transit will be a benefit.
This may make the streetcar a more viable commute option since they allow bikes on the streetcar — folks could bike from home along the Beltline and take the last bit on the streetcar instead of risking the downtown streets. And it would allow the tourists (who are already more likely to use it, IMHO) easier access to this fun feature of our fine city. Seems like a good idea to me, but quite costly.
Here’s Ryan Gravel on WABE earlier today about the positive impact the Beltline is having on neighborhoods.

Streetcar. The more places it goes the better it gets. This should be great for Kroger St Mkt.
I feel sorry for the businesses on Edgewood that had to put up with the bridge to the east being closed for so long that will now face the disruption of the streetcar construction. Makes more sense to me to build a line from the Centennial Park terminus to Ponce City Market, which would also connect to the Beltline and help get tourists to the market.
