Southern Sweets Starts Fund Drive to Assist with Hospice Care for Owner Nancy Cole

    Decatur Metro | June 15, 2015 | 3:41 pm

ncoleWe received this press release from Southern Sweets Bakery over the weekend…

Southern Sweets Bakery , announced they are launching a crowd funding page to assist with the expenses to pay for owner Nancy Coles in-home care. After some long term friends and patrons of the bakery made the suggestion, arrangements were made to set up a crowdrise site to support the cause.

Nancy Cole has been a fixture of the Decatur Community since she opened her doors as a wholesale bakery in 1992. She has been an active part of the local community and when the community started knocking on the door looking for some sweets she answered. In 1998, she expanded her business by adding a retail shop as she continued to supply some of the top restaurants in the metro Atlanta area with desserts. With the retail portion of the business she cultivated long term friendships and earned the respect of her peers not to mention she lent a hand in the community whenever she could.

Nancy was diagnosed with breast cancer approximately four years ago and quietly underwent treatment and began recovery. Everything was looking good but then in 2013 cells of the invasive cancer were discovered in her brain and a mass was removed in December of that same year. She was soon on the path of recovery once again. Unfortunately, during a follow up in 2014, they discovered cancer cells in her liver tissue. Determined to beat it she began treatment once again. Although she was receiving treatment her health continued to deteriorate. In early 2015, after spending some time in the hospital, she was transferred home, treatment was halted, and now Mrs Nancy requires twenty four our hospice care. (insurance does not cover this) Phil, her husband, worries about how this will affect their personal finances not to mention the bakery which was truly her passion. (The bakery has continued to thrive in her absence over the past four years) The bakery family would like to invite you to help them in this difficult time by making a donation towards the cost of her 24 hour nursing care.

Please help if possible. Nancy has given much of herself to our community.

I think this is a nice thing to do but I would also suggest that her husband look into this non-profit hospice. The link provides all details that might be helpful to them. Although it is a “jewish” hospice, they serve all people and it says that if insurance doesn’t cover the care, they do not turn anyone away. http://www.weinsteinhospice.com/

I know someone who used the service and they were great.
