Mural Planned for Trinity Triangle Parking Deck That Fronts Howard Ave
Decatur Metro | June 4, 2015 | 9:43 amA few folks here have expressed frustration here with the Trinity Triangle (aka Arlo) parking deck that now fronts East Howard Avenue. The city provided some interesting further details on this layout and what’s planned to mitigate it in the latest Decatur Focus…
We had originally hoped to have residential fronting the railroad side of the parking deck but it was impossible to get financing for the project with that configuration. While the parking deck will be visible from the south side of the project, the developer has committed to working with the Decatur Arts Alliance to identify and fund a mural artist to create a work of art on that elevation, and to maintain the artwork after its creation.

Thank god!
Pig, meet lipstick.
On the other hand, better than nothing at all.
yes, I’m happy that something nice will be added to that enormous eyesore- I just wish that side of the deck had been considered to be done with living walls- flowers, greenery, resident garden beds. Maybe next time this issue comes up? Or, maybe an opportunity to partner with Decatur Housing Authority to finance affordable units trackside? Is there still maybe opportunity to do the latter?
Living wall is a great idea… it would cost (allot) more, but it might be a good option for the arts alliance to propose. A living mural perhaps?
As long as they don’t get the same team that is doing the mural on the RR overpass on Columbia Drive. I cringe every day as I drive through that.
Are you referring to the “Underwater Pass?”
Planning needs to figure out how to conceal parking decks. Allowing new development at the expense of viewsheds outside the development makes little sense.
Does anyone know if there has ever been any talk of a mural in the grey wasteland of that tunnel/underpass connecting East Lake and Oakhurst? I’m not sure if this would be complicated by Atlanta, Decatur, and Dekalb approval, but I think about the need for something every time I walk, run, cycle, or drive by it.
Seems like a great project for some Decatur High School or metro area students.
I imagine there is a rendering of the project from the College Av side that was purposely kept secret. I agree with the “eyesore” comment.
Turn it into a rock climbing wall.
How about just a simple facade to break it up a little bit?
Hope there are plenty of defibrillators for when the train goes by late at night. It will raise the dead when they toot the horn!
Please, DM, post a photo of the view of the garage from the South Candler and College intersection (in place of that dreamy opposite side rendering provided by the developer).
How can anyone say with a straight face that a mural is going to hide or minimize that abomination? Approval was a major fail for the city (but no doubt allowed the developer to maximize profit).
BTW, the greater visual insult may come at night when each level of the five- or six-story behemoth is internally illuminated with a nice cold fluorescent light.
