Tapas Restaurant Opening In Former Carpe Diem Space In Ice House Lofts

    Decatur Metro | May 31, 2015 | 8:39 pm

    carpe diem

Carpe Diem closed over two years ago.  And since then the restaurant space on the first floor has sat empty.

But back in April, residents reported that the windows of the old Carpe Diem space in the Ice House Lofts were papered over and a message was written on the paper.

“Chic new restaurant coming soon!  Check out AbleQualityRemodeling.com for more info!” But there was no new info on the website and inquiries to Able Quality Remodeling were not returned.

But it looks like we finally have an answer to the question – what is finally taking the place of Carpe Diem on Sycamore Place?

On the agenda for Monday’s city commission meeting, the commission will take up approving a liquor license for Rezagarse Tapas, which registered under the address: 105 Sycamore Place, Suite 1.

There’s very little info about Rezagarse Tapas online, aside from a post looking for an Executive Chef which describes the restaurant as “a new Spanish Tapas concept in Downtown Decatur”.

But hey, at least it’s a start!

      Yes, but http://www.theonion.com/graphic/tapas-arriving-too-fast-50537

Well, the translation of “rezagarse” is “to trail, lag, or straggle.” (Or, I’m guessing “to take one’s time.”) So the name is perhaps a good fit?

In order to compete with Iberian Pig, I suggest more foie gras.

The new owner of this restaurant came before the Historical Preservation Commission at the last meeting. Seemed like a great guy with a lot of restaurant experience (although not intown tapas restaurants). They are subdividing the space, so this won’t be as large at Carpe Diem was. If I remember right, the rest of the space will be a small office and maybe a couple loft residential units.

I’m excited to see something there. I like it’s proximity to Winnona and the Patio.

What a strange name. Rezagarse is to fall behind, like “I’m falling behind on my work” or “He’s fallen behind in school”. It doesn’t really have positive connotations. Pero los gringos nunca sabrán.

Why give a restaurant a name very few people know how to pronounce?!?

Ask Makan, who seem to be doing alright.

Makan is arguably less intimidating than Rezagarse. Four syllables with a z and a g (is it a soft or hard g?), an r after a g when it could easily go before it, and the accent on the third syllable is not going to be easy for ‘Mericans. But it may improve all of our Spanish pronunciations!

Rezagarse (Rez-uh-gar-say) is also an intransitive verb for “linger”, which is the intended use for the restaurant name. It also has a nice cadence.
