Construction on the long-awaited downtown Decatur Waffle House – first announced here back in April 2014 – is about to begin.
DM has confirmed with Asst. City Manager Lyn Menne that construction on the renovation of the former Sammiches n’ Stuff/Little Shop space at 515 North McDonough will begin in the next two weeks.
We have also confirmed that Waffle House will remove the false front of the building as part of the renovation and will attempt restore the original brick to its former glory if its still in good shape– similar to the rehabilitation done on the exterior of the Jeni’s Ice Cream space a couple of years ago.
Ms. Menne notes “They are not used to rehabbing and are going out on a limb to meet our request and we appreciate that effort.”
Like many other Waffle House locations around the country, the Decatur location will be open 24 hours.

A Waffle House and a WalMart? Y’all are getting upscale.
No Walmart. That got left off the annexation map (unless they changed it in the last hour).
Oh it’s yours. Waffle House, Dairy Queen, and a WalMart. Y’all are just like a wide space in the road south Georgia town,
“Waffle House, Dairy Queen, and a WalMart.”
Oh my.
Decatur just needs to land another bbq place, then we’ll be all set! :0)
(I like your comment so much I’m gonna have to write it out where I can see it every day! :0)
I think this is a good addition. I rarely eat at WH anymore, but it’s good to have something besides the relatively pricey restaurants downtown ( especially one that does breakfast all the time).
I can see them doing well for breakfast and lunch. It’s kind “off the beaten path” for a 24 hour restaurant.
They need to bill themselves as a place that parents of young children can go to get some work/reading done in peace, day or night. I was always looking for that when the kids were young–I hoped that Decatur Diner would fit the bill but it didn’t.
I could be overthinking this, but maybe they’re actually hoping to attract people who want to come there to spend money to eat, then turn the booth over to others of like mind. Ya think? 😉
+10,000 on so many levels
Yes, it would be bad for my waistline but good for my work and good for Waffle House revenues. Unless their coffee refills are free. I think it would be fair for Waffle House to require customers to order at least one new chargeable item per hour. Maybe things have changed in recent years, but my memory of Waffle Houses in the evening or night time is that there was usually one or two loners who seemed to be dozing off or staring vacantly in the booths as much as they were actively consuming food, maybe occasionally sipping at a mostly empty coffee cup. I would definitely be more profitable than them.

They should make this a plot on Mad Men: Don Draper pitches “parent quiet time” for Waffle House ad campaign, everyone is astonished at how far he’s fallen, he gets fired, has existential crisis, drinks heavily and sleeps around. I realize that he already does these last two things regularly, I just did not want to leave them out.
Well played…
It will be right downstairs from Eddie’s, which should give them some late business.
IIRC, there are the remains of a good looking terrazzo floor in that building. I’d love to see that restored. Love terrazzo.
The only terrazzo I see is in the entrance. Is there terrazzo somewhere else?
Cheap coffee 24/7? Booths? The high school kids I know can’t wait for WH to open.
This is what I was thinking. Chik-fil-A and Starbucks might be feeling a hit pretty soon.
Somebody needs to let the bird loose. There was one flying around in there this weekend. Poor thing kept flying into the window.
