Woodlands Garden In Process of Acquiring Neighboring Property with Help of Downtown Development Authority

On the agenda for tonight’s Decatur City Commission meeting, Decatur’s Downtown Development Authority is set to purchase the property at 915 Clairemont Avenue for $695,000 and enter into an agreement with Woodlands Garden, who will make monthly interest-only payments on the property for 18 months.
After 18 months, Woodlands will need to purchase the property or the DDA can sell the property to anyone.

This could be very good news. I have always been a little fearful about what would end up on that corner. Very busy intersection and a very bad location for any kind of high traffic usage. I don’t know what the zoning is, or what Woodlands Garden intends to do with the property.
So…what’s the goal here? Woodlawn Gardens is a great resource for Decatur. Are they planning a new entrance, more land, etc.?

Yes and it’s at a gateway to City of Decatur. A greenish attractive gateway would be nice if it works out.

How much land does Woodlands own and is it entirely inside City of Decatur? I’m just wondering whether it will be completely inside the moat we’ve yet to build…
Buying this land as greenspace is a cover. It’s actually to gain right-of-way for the very moat you speak of.

I always wished an old service station had been put on that corner. Once it went out of business, we would have a ready made location for a Leon’s or U-Joint expansion!
If this property includes the brick apt. building, which I think it does, it would be nice if DDA and Woodland could carve out the building in its own stand alone parcel, and perhaps sell it to an affordable housing developer who could then turn it into below-market rate apts… 2 birds of open space/parkland plus affordable housing. the sale of the housing portion would then also help pay for the preservation purchase.
the 2 storey apartment block is a separate property., not included in the corner property
I mean the 2 story brick house which could become a quad-plex (looks to me from distance like it is already subdivided). County records show that structure as part of the 3 acre parcel on corner of Clairmont and Scott- though DDA may have already carved that out of the purchase, but seems unlikely as zillow is listing entire property of land and structure for sale at $695,000.
