drove down E. College this morning and was noticing the southside/sidewalk side of the road has very few street lights along the stretch from E. Lake to Ages Scott due to all of the trees that line that side. there are a few lights on the track side of E. College but at night they don’t cast much light onto the sidewalk.
illuminating that stretch would require serious pruning and/or clearing. i can only imagine the hue and cry that would create yet that’s what’s necessary to increase safety.
It is extremely dark on many main roads throughout the city, but not just because of trees. In many cases, the streetlight is burned out (i.e. behind DQ, at Benson & S. McDonough) however it is very challenging getting GA Power to come out and fix them. I think it took 3 months the last time I tried. I wish the city would do a survey of the main roads and put in a blanket request to getting existing lights back on.
Of course when lights were added from Carpe Diem to Kimball House, some said it was too bright.
Getting existing lights to work seems like a reasonable, low tech, non-invasive way to improve lighting and safety. For the two decades I’ve been in Decatur, non-working street lights have been a chronic problem, on residential as well as main roads. Better and consistent lighting not only may prevent crime, but encourages walking and protects pedestrians, especially where sidewalks still do not exist.
in the interim, which may be quite a while, the best advice is probably to drive (vs. walking) home from our local watering holes at closing time.
No way, man. The more people on the street on foot, the better.
well, that effort will need to be led by others, sista.
my decrepit arse is no longer in the habit of walking home from bars i close down at 2 AM in the morning.
on the other hand, i’ll happily be the drum major for any group of parents who wish to march down to an Oakhurst village bar for a quaff after school drop-off in the morning—getting my wabbits out the door in the morning is really stressful.
It sounds like you’re talking about West College rather than East College but, yeah. I get it.
Not sure if there’s any connection but this past Thursday, Georgia Power went down College, stopped at every street light and raised the bucket so the guy could do… something.
As for illuminating the south side of the street, right now the biggest obstacle is that College is a state highway, which means street lamps are not allowed in the strip between the road and the sidewalk. It would have to be on the yard side, which means the city, county or state would need to purchase the easements. Even then, such lights would still fall within the RR’s legal clear zone, so CSX would also have the power to say no or make it onerous if they wanted to. Which is all a longwinded way of saying it ain’t gonna happen.
There’s a ton of utility poles along the tracks that don’t have street lamps attached, though. If more light was to be added, I’m sure that’s where they’d do it.
At 6:59 AM there is enough light to easily read a newspaper outside. Cutting down all the trees won’t change the situation.
Thank you.
people are getting robbed at ~1:30 AM on that sidewalk
I would not advocate the removal of trees to increase sidewalk visibility, but it would be nice to see some of the personal “jungles” tamed. This goes for sidewalks all over town.
