Decatur Metro | July 10, 2014 | 3:50 pmDecatur Police just sent out this alert…
There have been five older model vehicles reported stolen in Decatur in the past ten days. Four were in the Northeast zone and one in the Southeast zone. Three were stolen during daytime hours, one was stolen during overnight hours and one was stolen over a three day period. Please continue to watch out for your neighbors and call police immediately if you observe suspicious behavior or circumstances. Your awareness and calls help guide the officers in the right direction and result in prevention and arrests.
– On 06-30-2014, a 1998 Plymouth Grand Voyager was stolen from the roadway in the 100 block of Champlain Street between 8:00 am – 5:50 pm. Investigators later learned the vehicle was recovered abandoned by DeKalb PD before the victim had even reported the vehicle stolen to Decatur PD.
– On 06-30-2014 at approximately 5:00 pm, a 1997 Honda Accord was stolen from the 100 block of Candler Oaks Lane. The vehicle owner reported he was walking and saw a vehicle that looked identical to his at the red light on Kirk Road at South Candler Street. He returned to where his vehicle was left parked and it was missing. He could not see the suspect. A piece of door molding was found on the ground which is indicative of the door having been pried as the method of entry. The vehicle was recovered abandoned later in south DeKalb County later in the day.
– On 07-04-2014, a 1994 Nissan Pathfinder was stolen from the roadway in the 400 block of Sycamore Drive between 2-3:50 pm. The owner had been working on the vehicle in front of his residence and left the key in the ignition and the vehicle was stolen when he momentarily went inside. A neighbor later reported seeing a middle-aged black male, skinny with short hair, wearing a white ball cap get into the vehicle and drive away. The neighbor thought the male was helping work on the vehicle at the time.
– On 07-06-2014, a 1999 Toyota Corolla was reported stolen from the roadway in the 200 block of Sycamore Place. The vehicle was stolen between 07-03-2014 at noon and 07-06-2014 at 10:00 am
– On 07-10-2014, a 1996 Honda Accord was reported stolen from a driveway in the 200 block of Lockwood Terrace. The vehicle was stolen between 07-09-2014 at 7:00 pm and 07-10-2014 at 5:00 am.

Sounds like we need a better class of car thief.
Older models are easier to steal. Might partly explain why they are all from the nineties.
It’s because old cars need parts so piecing it out can be lucrative and I would imagine the parts are much harder to trace than a car.
That one car took a long time to steal. Did it get stolen in pieces?
It was parked down the street a bit in front of my house versus theirs, so it wasn’t noticed right away
Oh dear. They are targeting our car demographic. Lack of blue book value is not protective.
The pathfinder was mine that was stolen. The thief only had moments to steal it. I was working on it and left to load up more camping gear… Right in front of my garage door. We are so close o Marta that there is no telling where they are coming from. I let my sanitation workers and mail carriers know to be on the look out. I made posters and posted them on line as well as distribution. I mention this to give others a method to help the police find these fools.
Sheesh…Decatur is becoming ridden with these crimes. I know I have little info to base these claims on, but I feel like Decatur PD needs to have a bigger presence in these neighborhoods. They had ~5 squad cars in a checkpoint (and made me stop) to tell me about a FIVE mph speed limit decrease. Like, really? The speed limit is not important at all when cars are getting stolen left and right.
Pretty sure there weren’t any vehicles reported stolen during the times the public education stops were conducted. As minor as you think the 5MPH reduction is, you can be sure that there would be folks howling “Unfair!!” if they were to get a speeding ticket due to the enhanced Residential Zone enforcement if DPD hadn’t made the extra effort to get the word out.
I hear you. I just hope they were also looking for potential leads and thieves. I’m retired so I’ve been staying up late walking out to the street on Sycamore Drive. I’m going to be a one-man neighborhood watch.
You might want to enroll in the Decatur Heights Neighborhood Watch so that you can receive and share alerts. If interested, send an email to decaturheightsneighbors@gmail (dot)com with Neighborhood Watch in the subject line, and we’ll get you signed up.
(So you know, the police report for your vehicle theft (edited for privacy) was sent out to neighbors.)
is there a sign-up list somewhere? cos the A/C is on the fritz, and it’s, like, turrible.
Mitch- sorry to hear your car was stolen, it sounds like you were getting ready for a nice trip. I live on Superior and about $2,500 worth of tools and equipment was stolen from my shed in the middle of the day.
Many thieves are looking for lots of activity on a street so they can blend in without being noticed. It’s especially important to take care when house construction or renovation is going on in your neighborhood. With all the additional workers, cars, traffic, residents are not as aware of suspicious activity.
Trevor I’ve been getting up from midnight to 4 AM the morning walking down Sycamore Drive. I also see the Decatur Police Department. I wish they would post photographs of the stolen cars and vehicles and equipment. But I can’t call somebody suspicious just because they’re walking down the road. But I’ve seen suspicious people. They don’t see me but I can’t follow or watch them for more than a couple blocks.
Nice. I appreciate the diligence.
Just be careful, there are some crazy people out there.
If this keeps up, Decatur can start publishing an annual top 5 stolen vehicles list, like they do in El Paso, TX.

Yes by the way I have been a one-man neighborhood watch. I served in the United States Marine Corps. I have always been on the lookout for criminals. I’m not a zealous idiot. We do have some that are. FYI I was up from 2 to 4 am. I would walk outside. All I saw was a female walking her dog. She never saw me. And there was nothing suspicious. And I did see the police roll buy three times. Once they stopped with their lights focused right next to my condo. Someone had a mini motorcycle out in the open. I have to think they’re doing what they can do.
Thank you very much Mitch! I do appreciate it..

I have two 1990’s cars. Is it better to have them backed in to the driveway, or driven in to the driveway, assuming they might try to tow them away? I promise not to leave the keys inside. Or do they crack the steering column and hotwire them?
Pull the coil wire or install a kill dead switch.
