UPDATED: Elderly Decatur Woman Killed, Relative Charged

    Decatur Metro | October 30, 2013 | 4:25 pm

UPDATE: The AJC story is here.  Decaturish has posted a short remembrance of Ms. Shirley, noting that she won a Hometown Heroes award back in 2002 and this past summer had helped police identify robbery suspects.

    From Decatur PD…

On Tuesday, October 29, 2013 at approximately 11:57 pm, Decatur Fire responded to a residence in the 200 block of Cambridge Avenue in reference to a medical call.  Decatur Police were called to the scene when medical personnel suspected an assault had occurred.  The victim, identified as 75-year-old Shirley Kendrick, was transported to an area hospital where she later died. Mrs. Kendrick appeared to have been stabbed and to have sustained a head injury.  Family members attempted to intervene in the assault and Mrs. Kendrick’s son suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries and Mrs. Kendrick’s husband received minor injuries. Mrs. Kendrick’s grandson, 23-year-old Marquis La’Vonta Freeman, has been arrested and charged with murder, aggravated assault and battery.

Kimball House Ranks as One of the “Hottest” Cocktail Bars in US by Eater

    Decatur Metro | October 29, 2013 | 10:30 am

The website Eater recently ranked the Top 30 “Hottest” Cocktail bars in the country and Decatur’s The Kimball House made the cut.  Their blurb reads…

Kimball House opened its doors in Decatur in late September, one of Eater Atlanta’s most anticipated Fall openings. Along with an inspired food menu, cocktails here have gained enormous buzz over the past month thanks to the involvement of Leon’s Full Service’s Miles Macquarrie. Kimball House has already gotten great early feedback from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and snagged a new bartender over from Atlanta’s Holeman & Finch.

    Wild Heaven Brewery Construction Underway

    Decatur Metro | October 29, 2013 | 9:11 am

    From the Atlanta Business Chronicle…

Wild Heaven Craft Beers busted out the sledgehammers to mark the start of construction of its 8,000 square-foot brewery in Avondale Estates.

The new brewery, 7 miles from downtown Atlanta, will be outfitted with a 30-barrel brewing system that was previously utilized by SweetWater Brewing Co. and Terrapin Brewing and a tasting room featuring the Wild Heaven beers and seasonal offerings will be a feature.

You can view a nice little slideshow of the initial construction over on the ABC website.

Don’t forget that the City Schools of Decatur is holding a Community Meeting this evening at 6p to discuss rezoning the elementary schools to incorporate Westchester Elementary back into the mix.

If you missed our earlier post on the subject, check it out HERE.  You can also check out CSD’s dedicated page for this effort – HERE.

We haven’t seen the three current options under consideration online yet, but we’ve heard they’re likely be available after the meeting this evening.  Stay tuned.

Correction!  The map options are available on the CSD website.  See here!
