Georgia Power Space in Downtown Decatur “For Lease”

    Decatur Metro | July 11, 2013 | 9:39 am

    signage

You may have noticed the “For Lease” sign hanging about the Georgia Power space in One Town Center in downtown Decatur at the intersection of Ponce and Church Street – since it’s been there for weeks now!  We had heard rumors that a restaurant was going into this space at one point, but perhaps that didn’t come to fruition.

Either way, the move out by Georgia Power is big enough news in and of itself, as one of the old remarks about Georgia Power was that the office location was a bit problematic since it brought a good number of cars downtown (customers paying bills), but didn’t really inject much money into the local economy.

It will be very interesting to see what ultimately goes into this space!

Hmmm… Being a good citizen within walking distance of downtown, I always pay my bill in person (water bill also) and there are generally 3 to 6 people in that office paying bills, making payment arrangements or turning on service. I wonder what those folks who are doing their business in person, generally out of necessity (many pay in cash) are going to do?

Did the location move or just close? When walking downtown, I get asked fairly often where the GP office is (and where you go to pay your water bill–never able to answer that one).

I think it’s still there ??? It was a few weeks ago when I paid my bill and there were no signs inside advising of a closing or location change.

I have heard they are opening in N. Dekalb mall. Quite a challenge for MARTA riders.

          And beyond my walking distance.

MARTA buses go by N. DeKalb Mall all the time. Not that challenging.

And paying a power bill in person isn’t (or probably shouldn’t be) a frequent occurrence.

Twice in the last 2 years, I have found that I could get things done at the GP office in person that were not possible with their website, or took longer when talking to an operator. And I was in and out sometimes in under 2 minutes.

Their online web process is designed for “I am moving from address A to address B – switch my power bill accordingly.” Anything outside that model (e.g., “my tenant is moving out, do not turn off the power, and please start billing me”) may require human intervention.

I will miss the quick walk convenience. But yes – not a frequent occurrence. I’d much rather see more retail there!

If we are just talking about paying a bill, I wonder if this is something one of the downtown convenience stores could take over? I know some convenience stores process such payments. I assume they charge a small fee.

As I said, most of the people who were there during my monthly visit, and there were always some, were there to make payment arrangements, start or restore service, and most of those paying bills were doing so with cash. My visits were by choice to do something I could have done online; those folks were there because, in some cases, they wanted or needed face-to-face contact.

Pay your water bill on the west side of the County building at 1300 Commerce. Separate entrance.

Was this the space where Big Boss Chinese was supposed to be located? I hope they are still coming to Decatur.

Yeah, that was my primary concern as well.

You never know what’s in the mind of a commercial real estate broker. The Guy Wong thing might still be a go based on a Letter of Intent. For instance, there’s still a big “For Lease” sign on the new El Myr location in Kirkwood, despite the fact that the buildout is in progress.

Decatur Heat & Power? or is that programmed in the Beacon Hill muni complex on Electric Ave?
