Decatur Square Singled Out By Travel + Leisure
Decatur Metro | March 28, 2013 | 10:30 amWho on earth knows how these lists are compiled, but free publicity is free publicity, right?
Travel + Leisure has named the much discussed and once quite controversial Decatur Square as one of “America’s Most Beautiful Town Squares” and manages to squeeze in at least one reference to Cakes & Ale.
Cities such as New London, Portsmouth and Oskaloosa also make the list.
Look at all those revenue-negative children swarming all over the Square! They better not live in any of the revenue-positive condos!
Come on now, AHID. I expect this kind of comment from myself, not you!
That is a really cool picture.
Agreed! The photographer even managed to make the horrid “new” courthouse look slightly less horrid.
Everything looks better in HDR!
Thanks — I’m the photographer who took this image for the Downtown Development Authority.
I put a lot of thought into what these kinds of images should convey when someone looks at them. Since the purpose of this shot is to attract people and business to downtown Decatur, the feeling we wanted viewers to get was of a “safe, urban, nightlife.” I always enjoy working with the DDA to come up with a vision for what they want to project. They recognize the value of thinking the images through, rather than just using snapshots (like most of the other towns appear to have used).
I will take T + L’s word that the other towns are great places, but it’s worth flipping through the images on their list to guess what those towns wanted you to know about them. Maybe:
“You’ll have the place to yourself!”
or
“Our pavement is beautiful!”
We’re hitting the big time!
My question is, how long did it take to clear the area of cigarette butts and scratch-off tickets? 😉
Honestly, I was there with my kids two weekends ago and the place was looking quite nasty. Lot’s of trash, buts, etc. This seemed to be really out of character with what I expect from Decatur.
