What’s the Best Coffee in Decatur/Atlanta?

    Decatur Metro | January 30, 2013 | 10:10 am

Cut through the hype! …as they say.

What’s the best coffee in the Atlanta/Decatur area?

Here’s a generic picture of a cup of coffee (via Flickr) to get you going.  Can’t you smell the generic aromas?

      Starbucks.

Best is Dancing Goats. Worst is Karvana. Which is odd considering they both are supposedly using Dancing Goats brand coffee!

      • FM Fats says:
        January 30, 2013 at 12:45 pm

It’s not really that odd. It’s all about the art of brewing and the equipment. Using room temperature water instead of cold water or using tap water instead of filtered water can make a big difference in taste. Not to mention cleaning the equipment.

Batdorf & Bronson has the best coffee.

The best coffee *shop* is an entirely different conversation, though… (in that case, I’m biased in favor of Java Monkey and the Grant Park Octane)

Best in Decatur Dancing Goats. Best in Atlanta is Octane (near Grant Park).

+1 – totally agree about Octane. Worst in Decatur (of the coffee shops) is Starbucks. I actually like the coffee at Revolution a lot too.

I’m not much for coffee, but you mentioned Revolution. I had their Revolution Cream Pie donut yesterday. Holy &$, that was good.

It could be the donuts improve the coffee.

“Farmers to 40” beans (sourced from Nicaragua) that I grind and brew myself.

If we’re talking coffee shops, I’ve been impressed by Drip at Glenwood Park.

The Grant Park Octane feels like I’m drinking coffee in a bright, spruced up garage. I can’t get comfortable in there. Though if I want to stand at a counter and be ignored, I know I can count on them for that. Damn them for making such delicious coffee.

It’s thankfully easy for me to swing by the City Hall East Dancing Goats on North & Glen Iris on my way to work. Good stuff.

How does one swing by? Where do you park?

        • Sarah says:

A little parking on the side, but a huge (free) parking deck behind the building.

        • FM Fats says:
          January 30, 2013 at 12:22 pm

You can actually swing ON the patio at the Dancing Goats in the O4W.

Dancing goats blend at kavarna. I pay the light bill there.

    9. JoeBlow says:
      January 30, 2013 at 11:05 am

Lots of good options. Batdorf & Bronson gets great beans and brews their coffee nice and strong. Unfortunately I’d have to agree on Kavarna…I’m not sure what they do differently in their brewing process but the Dancing Goats blend brewed there is nowhere near as tasty as B&B.

I buy Caribou’s Guatemalan (El Paraiso) beans almost religiously. Best light roasted beans out there.

On that note, San Franciso Coffee (I go to the DeKalb Ave location) has good beans too. Their manager roasts the beans himself, but for some reason (personal preference) he never offers a “light roast.”

    10. At Home in Decatur says:
      January 30, 2013 at 11:10 am

I agree with those who distinguish between best coffee and best coffeeshop. I have come to decide that Dancing Goats has the best coffee/lattes. And their staff are skilled, friendly, and remember their customers. But the atmosphere is a bit cold for me, although probably good for those lucky enough to have supervisors that allow them to work from coffeeshops. Among Decatur-ish shops, I enjoy the atmospheres at Kavarna, Cakes and Ale, Chocolate, Urban Grounds, Revolution Doughnuts, and even Starbucks. The coffee at all of those places is just fine for me. Java Monkey is cool and I’m glad it’s there (especially during the snowstorm of January 2010 when only it and Kavarna were open!) but the lighting is too dark for me and I’m just not into funky anymore.

For me, drive through coffee is another important category. For years, it was because it was such an advantage not to have to unstrap little ones from their carseats. Even now, it’s handy on way to work, shopping, or carpool destinations. For drive through, Caribou is far superior to Starbucks and McDonalds IMHO.

Actually, I am caffeine-dependent enough that I will drink coffee in any Decatur area location. I have yet to find coffee I won’t drink except what comes out of vending machines. And once, I even drank that.

“but the lighting is too dark for me and I’m just not into funky anymore.”

Interesting…I have to admit I sometimes feel too old for the funky, but I love the low lighting there, especially when stopping by for dessert after dinner.

“For me, drive through coffee is another important category”

I rarely do drive-thru coffee, but I prefer Dunkin Donuts because they add the cream and sugar for you. Not the best coffee, but I actually prefer it to Starbucks. Unfortunately, there aren’t many Dunkins around my area of travel.

    11. MermaidNM says:
      January 30, 2013 at 11:11 am

I prefer Dancing Goats Decaf in Decatur and San Francisco on Dekalb Ave when I venture outside the 30030.

In reality, the best coffee for me would be the one handed to me through my car window while my daughter is snuggly tucked in her car seat in the back seat. I bemoan the lack of a drive through coffee shop in a convenient location at least once a week. Can anyone do something about that for me?

    12. Cubalibre says:
      January 30, 2013 at 11:24 am

Well, the best is actually at Casa Libre. But if I’m having coffee out, Dancing Goats. B&B beans are the shiggity!

Chocolate has the best coffee. Much prefer it to Dancing Goats. Prices are better too, it’s only a few cents but if you have a serious habit that can make a difference. I always keep my Chocolate card stocked — buy 9 drinks and the tenth is free.

Java Monkey is friendly but I have to agree it’s a bit dark. If you want to cruise a serious bulletin board however, that one will keep you entertained for at least 15 minutes. San Francisco on DeKalb Ave is nice and bright. I haven’t visited the DAncing Goats on North Ave but hope to find an excuse to stop by soon.

    15. brianc says:
      January 30, 2013 at 12:30 pm

I’d probably go with the coffee at the Cakes and Ale bakery as the best I’ve had around Decatur, but Java Monkey is by far my favorite coffee shop to hang out at with a slice of cake and a cup of Chai. And it’s great for getting a cup of java to go before hopping on MARTA. I also like the Peruvian beans they have for take-home sale (I’ve never seen anyone else buy beans there, for some reason). Java Monkey, in my view, is one of the three signature, hall-of -fame retail businesses in Decatur, with Brick Store and Eddie’s Attic being the other two.

Atlanta was a coffee wasteland when we moved here 25 years ago. About the best coffee you could find was Macy’s Cellar blend. Until Starbuck’s, Caribou, and similar places showed up, we used to get coffee by mail order from Peet’s in the Bay Area. Peet’s is now on the shelves at Publix and Kroger. We pick some up whenever a 12 oz. bag goes on sale for $8. When we’re in the chips, we go to Dancing Goats and pick up a couple of bags of whatever Batdorf & Bronson flavor catches our fancy.
Athens’ Jittery Joe’s Terrapin Wake & Bake is great, too. For a limited time you can get cans of a nice Jittery Joe’s medium roast, Flinnsomnia, at Mingei World Arts, $12 for 12 ounces (which is what Whole Paycheck gets for a can of Jittery Joe’s). Proceeds from the sale of Flinnsomnia go to help out the family of retired Athens schoolteacher/folk potter Tim Flinn as he is about to undergo a bone marrow transplant as part of his fight against a second bout of leukemia.

      FM Fats,
Atlanta Coffee Roasters in Toco Hills was around well before Starbucks, I think. Haven’t been there in years though.

Is that the same place that used to call itself Coffee Plantation?

        • brianc says:
          January 30, 2013 at 5:13 pm

That sounds vaguely familiar. I know the place has been there at least 25 years, so it may have had more than a few names.

        • At Home in Decatur says:
          January 30, 2013 at 5:55 pm

Pretty sure that’s a yes. Strangely, Coffee Plantation, or one of its isomeric configurations, initially sold coffee beans and products, but did not serve coffee. I remember being disappointed in that. But that was just before coffeeshops hit Atlanta big-time.

    18. brianc says:
      January 30, 2013 at 1:16 pm

Back in the 80s, long before I acquired a taste for coffee, I worked after school at the Toco Hills Kroger. Walking from my car to the Kroger, I’d catch a whiff from Atlanta Coffee Roasters and wonder why coffee tasted so bad but smelled so good.

    19. Judd says:
      January 30, 2013 at 1:18 pm

Easy answer, but harder to execute. Order green coffee beans from Sweet Maria’s. Roast them at home. Brew using Chemex, french press, or (my fav) a vacuum pot.

But I would not recommend this, since it will ruin almost all other coffee for you and it’s kind of a pain in the neck. Still, you asked.

This is a good place to start.

          http://www.sweetmarias.com/instructions.php

I have used the hot air popcorn method. It works but if you really want to roast your own coffee on a regular basis you need a roaster.

        • Judd says:
          January 30, 2013 at 4:07 pm

I started with a table top roaster, ordered from Sweet Maria’s. That worked great, but the batches were small and it burned out. These things run hot! Since then I’ve used a drum attachment for the rotisserie on a gas grill. As I said, it is pain.

But if you dig coffee, the Sweet Maria’s website is worth checking out just to see it. It really is astounding.

      My $.02…
I do not like the coffee at Dancing Goats or Kavarna. I guess I grew up on Starbucks, so need a good deep roast. DG coffee just tastes *off* to me.

San Francisco Coffee has a great Old Whalers Blend or slightly less dark Candler Park roast, just the right amount of 1/2&1/2 and sugar and I am good to go. Their service is hit and miss though, and that bugs me. I never order food there that’s not ready-to-go.

I have now discovered the coffee at Revolution Doughnuts. Great Colombian roast there. I feel bad not buying a doughnut when I go in there though.

      • TrixieinDixie says:
        January 30, 2013 at 3:26 pm

Would you please explain how you can go into Revoloution Donuts just for coffee? I couldn’t do it…I can’t even go in and get just one donut, it’s always 2 (or sometimes more, but I will always deny it if asked!).

        • Arriba says:
          January 30, 2013 at 4:23 pm

Trixie – OK you may not believe this, but I don’t like doughnuts. (Now some of you out there reading probably know who “Arriba” is now.)

I also just tried Sugar Moon’s cupcakes this past weekend, and….meh.

Now Southern Sweets red velvet or carrot cake, mmmmm.

All this fancy talk is really making me scratch my head and wonder what new business model I can come up with to get rich by selling a product at about a 350% mark-up per serving!

I’m OK with being in the minority on this one. I buy the 2-pound ground containers at Kroger or Sam’s Club, brew two cups every morning and add my flavored non-dairy creamer. Sometimes I even splurge and buy the exotically flavored, non-Kroger brand creamer – but only when there’s a really good sale on it. On the rare occasions that I buy coffee at a coffee shop, I invariably feel like I just failed an IQ for doing so. But then again, I’m a cheap bastard who actually likes the bargain bin brew.

I *will* admit that I did enjoy the after-dinner coffee at Cakes and Ale when we ate there last month. In fact, everyone at the table was like “Damn, that’s good coffee” and I even commented that I usually don’t order coffee when we are out but that it was delicious. Then we got the bill and I made the mistake of looking at how much it cost and figuring out how many pounds of Kroger coffee I could have bought for that. Doh!

I tend to agree and I’m usually at a coffee shop more because of the coffee shop experience than for any other reason. Regardless of where I go, it’s still rarely better than Folgers in my cup in my own kitchen. I even put up with lesser coffee just for the fun of going out, that’s why I’ve always been so disappointed at how bad I think Kavarna’s coffee almost always is. Occasionally they get it right, but I only return because it’s in the hood. I’ve never been a fan of Starbucks since it has always had a burnt taste to me as opposed to what some call dark roast. I did Kickstarter with Revolution Doughnuts so have taken advantage of the reward for supporting them, and I think they have damn fine coffee. I might even stop in more often if they had a coffee only line. When on the road, McDonalds coffee has always been pretty darn good, plus if you spill it in your lap you get PAID! Lastly, there’s something I just love about sitting at a counter for coffee and the Bakery at Cakes and Ale fills the bill wonderfully while pouring a top notch product to boot.

Of course, if anyone sees me in there at any point in the next 6 weeks eating anything other than a grain bowl or soup, you have my permission to call the food police. Me and the Mrs are officially signed up and weighed in (we did the early weigh-in tonight). I’ve been eating like such crap for the past week, trying to get in everything that I won’t be able to eat for six weeks, that I’m not sure I would’ve made it until Saturday without a prophylactic angioplasty. You guys need to post your progress weekly on FFAF. Dave Kell did this when he had a blog. It was fun to watch. You could include graphs, recipes, tips, and light sarcasm. We could respond with encouragement, tips, recipes, graphs, and light sarcasm.

Meanwhile, I’m going to have an apricot poptart at Dancing Goats. (Notice the reference to original topic so this is not a threadjack.)

Serious comment: In the history of my weight history, the only thing that has worked for me in losing weight is increased calorie expenditure, i.e. lots of exercise. Eating healthy is a good idea but portion control is against my religion. I knew someone ages ago who was on an excessive diet and ate so many raw carrots that her skin actually turned yellowish.

That’s because Starbucks always over roast their coffee. Any time you see the oil on the surface of the beans, it’s over roasted and even though it’s counterintuitive the lighter the roast , the more caffeine.

I think everyone (everyone that can at all afford to) likes to splurge on certain things even though they could get substantially the same product for a lot less. Me, I can’t stand to spend money on most material things like unnecessary car-related expenses, energy bills (you’ll need a sweater at my place), clothes except for decent shoes, sporting equipment (so easily purchased used)…but I don’t mind dropping some coin for good food and beverages and fun experiences.

Word Up on that Brother JT. Agree with you like one dang thousand percent. What’s up with all this “best coffee in Decatur” stuff. What about more important stuff, like “Best Free Parking In Decatur”. Just one question though, and please don’t take this as a shark attack, but if you’re so Clark Howard concerning coffee (me too, except I go for Maxwell House. Like the best ev!), what in tar-nation are you doing at Cakes&Ale?! The Bush Tax days are over son. Time to start scrimpin’.
But seriously JT, best coffee is the hot stuff waiting on you after dragging yourself from the warm bed, dogs still quiet, kids and Queen catching a few more Zzzzzzs, and the King all alone with the AJC and WSJ and the hot brew. Yeah Baby!
And one more thing, thank God for the guy who invented the automatic brew coffee machine. How did we live without it in Old Decatur!

Aren’t you married, Chris? Because if so, you know damn well how I end up at Cakes & Ale! In all seriousness it, along with Iberian Pig and No. 246, are great places to splurge but I eat probably 90% of my meals at home with ingredients bought on my weekly trips to Kroger/Publix/YDFM after checking all the ads and organizing coupons, so I think Clark Howard will approve the occasional expense 😉

While I enjoy a nice cup of coffee out occasionally, I’m with you on the math. Spending $3-5 a day adds up really fast.

But it is possible to be both cheap and get good coffee. You can get a massive bag of Sumatra beans at Costco for $17 that will probably get you 2 cups a day for 2 months. That’s $.15 a cup. Compare that to $3/day from your local shop, and you save $150/month.

        • Jo says:

Next time you buy your coffee at Costco try a brand they sell called Don Pablo. It is awesome. Much better than the Costco brand.

As far as Decatur coffee shops, I love Batdorf and Bronson (Dancing Goats Blend) as well as The Bakery at Cakes & Ale. But every time I go to The Bakery, I am stunned at how much the bill is. If you buy a bagel, they actually charge for butter and jelly. I get why they charge for cream cheese, but come on…for a pat of butter they charge 50 cents and another 50 cents for jelly? My daughter and I both each ordered a bagel butter and jelly and they tacked on an extra two bucks. Who eats a dry bagel?

While I enjoy a nice cup of coffee out occasionally, I’m with you on the math. Spending $3-5 a day adds up really fast.

But it is possible to be both cheap and get good coffee. You can get a massive bag of Sumatra beans at Costco for $17 that will probably get you 2 cups a day for 2 months. That’s $.15 a cup. Compare that to $3/day from your local shop, and you save $150/month.

Buy my beans at Java Lords in l5p. They roast it there, take suggestions if you notice anything’s off, and don’t totally ream you on price.

Octane has the best macchiato in my opinion

      I like Dancing Goats.

Worst — Intelligensia, a bag of which I once bought, in a pinch, at Urban Grounds in Avondale. Absurdly expensive, as in “are you serious, that’s really the price?” And the haughty name is off-putting. The coffee was average.

So much good coffee, so little time.

I’ll take DG, SFR on Dekalb and Mr. Dog’s “Dump a bunch of YFDM’s Columbian in the Mr Coffee and hope for the best”

But in my dreams, every day would begin with a big ol mug of Bacchanalia’s french press. Honestly. It is SO good.

My coffee drink of choice is the lowly americano. I find that it combates the problem of getting a cup of coffee that was brewed over 30 minutes in the past. Coffee doesn’t get better the longer it sits in the thermos.

Of course the americano comes with its own set of issues. Mainly too much water but if the barista can’t pull a decent shot of espresso that can cause problems too.

The best and most consistent americano I have had in Atlanta is at the L5P Aurora. I don’t know what they do but it hits my tastes buds right in the sweet spot.

In Decatur, Dancing Goats makes the best americano and it consistently impresses.

The rest of the coffee shops in Decatur typically have fine americanos but the consistency isn’t there.

I know this isn’t the question but it seems to be implied. My favorite coffee shop to go to is Kavarna. Some of that is because I live in Oakhurst so it is close and I enjoy seeing and talking to my neighbors while I am there. But the other part is I just like the “vibe”. Not too serious, not too quiet, not too loud, just right. The Emory kids have made Dancing Goats feel too much like a library. Java Monkey is a little too funky (as mentioned above). Urban Grounds is a little too out of the way. Which is why Kavarna gets 99% of my coffee business because it isn’t all about the coffee. If it was then I wouldn’t leave my house.

I can’t believe no one has mentioned Steady Hand Pour House in Emory Village. Intelligensia Coffee is superior to anythng dancing Goats can offer up. The business is locally owned with the owners always at the shop. They practically worship coffee. Octane has the reputation for the best coffee in Atlanta and I haven’t been since they left Emory Village, but if you haven’t been to Steady Hand, you haven’t had the best coffee.

I’ve found Steady Hand to consistently under-extract the bean. Not my cup of…*ahem*.

But agreed that they really are coffee enthusiasts.

I’ll add a +1 for Octane as well.

Despite trying again and again, I can’t find a B&B coffee I like. The one I like best so far is the Italian Roast. Alas, my favorite coffee is still Espresso Roast from Starbucks. (Bought pre-ground at Baby Kroger.) Any suggestions for other coffees I might like to try?

Regardless, I’d love to see DG/B&B to open an additional shop in the old Chocolate Bar space. I’d be there every day. The few times I’ve walked down to DG, it has been far too crowded for me (good for them, bad for me).

Java monkey- OK coffee, and like others, I just prefer the super mellow vibe in the AM where I can just sit and read for a minute. but for my midday treat, I LOVE their hot chocolate. As it’s been pretty cold lately, I’ve had a few cups a week. I also really like Octane coffee, just the coffee, not the vibe.

Someone gave m a french press for Christmas and I haven’t used it yet, but watched several videos on how to make it perfectly on youtube and allrecipes. Does anyone have any secret tricks they would care to share on how to make this as delicious as humanly possible? Also, does anyone put any spices, or anything out of the ordinary in their coffee? I’m feeling experimental after reading this post.

I can tell you one thing; this was the best cup/location ever for me. Fantastic Guatemalan bean coffee in the morning sitting on top of our tiny hotel in Antigua, Guatemala just enjoying the view. Later that day we went to the coffee plantation to see where and how it all begins.

        +1 on coffee in Antigua!

Been there as well – and as someone who usually drops a bit of sweetener and a bit o cream, I was impressed how sweet, smooth and delicious the coffee is black.

        R. Dalton is one of the primary suppliers for Starbucks Guatemalan blend, but you can also buy it direct from them online:

What Gwyneth said. I’d like to go to a coffee shop after 7pm. Which leaves Java Monkey. Which feels more like a bar at night, and the wifi is always spotty (for us sometimes remote workers).

Same w the bakery at Cakes and Ale, I love their coffee, but their is something about their chairs and tables that make me want to leave after 15 minutes.

Steady Hand Pour House by Emory is the BEST coffee in Atlanta/Decatur area and I have tried pretty much all of the coffee shops in this city, and this is in my opinion the very best!!! My second choice is coffee at Cakes and Ale. Third choice Dancing Goats. I share a previous comments disdain for Octane. As much as I like the convenience of Kavarna, I find the coffee mediocre.

Java Monkey makes my favorite cappuccino which is nice because we also like sitting there. I enjoy going to Dancing Goats, but for some reason the espresso just doesn’t quite do it for me. I like it enough to keep going back, but it’s just a bit odd. San Fran Coffee and Condesa are also favorites. Aurora in Little Five also makes good drinks. I love there are so many choices around our area.

I’ve never been against Starbucks. I don’t view them as coming in and forcing indies to close. I actually think they elevated cafe culture across the country. We go there sometimes because they are faily consistent from store to store and I like their lattes. It’s nice to know you can find one when travelling. But, yeah, I’d prefer a local most of the time.

Gotta go with Batdorf n’ Bronson. Best roasted beans that haven’t been crapped out by a rodent. The folks at the Deekater location are all awesome–polite, friendly, and knowledgable. Fer $%#*’s sake, that one guy has a sleeve tattoo of the history of coffee!

And is someone’s name really Batdorf? It’s not as bad as Felcher or Grogan, but that guy must’ve gotten teased a lot as a kid.
