    Sammiches n’ Stuff Closes

    Decatur Metro | October 29, 2012 | 5:29 pm

    Louis wrote in yesterday…

I saw the owner packing his car and removing the kitchen equipment on Saturday morning.  The “For Lease” sign is already in the window.  The owner said that they decided not to renew the lease…and had no plan to open up the business anywhere else or continue the catering business.

We stopped by this morning and indeed there is a lease sign in the window.  In addition to that, Brynda has posted a note on Patch announcing the closing.

It’s Literally Not Wednesday: It’s Gotta Be the Shoes

    Dave | October 29, 2012 | 12:56 pm

On The Same Page is running (pun intended) a two-part fundraiser to benefit Our House as well as On The Same Page, Decatur’s community-wide reading program.

This year’s book, Louis Sachar’s Holes, tells the story of Stanley Yelnats, a kid who seems destined to the whims of a family curse when he is sentenced to a youth detention camp after being wrongly accused of stealing a baseball star’s shoes — shoes that had been donated to a charity auction. The fundraisers are based on this theme.

First, there is a shoe drive. Please bring new and gently used shoes to Little Shop before November 3rd. Those will all be given to families at Our House. This is already off to a great start. (Thanks, Fleet Feet!)

In addition, On The Same Page is auctioning off shoes worn by Atlanta Braves players Freddie Freeman, Tommy Hanson, Chipper Jones, and Kris Medlen. Click here for details and links to the ebay auction sites. The shoes are currently on display at Little Shop. The auction ends this Sunday, November 4th.

Feel free to tell everyone you know!

Renfroe Language Arts Teacher Stacey Daniel Passes Away

    Decatur Metro | October 29, 2012 | 11:49 am

Very sad news out of Renfroe Middle School this morning.  We’ve been receiving emails all morning inquiring if we knew more.  CSD just sent out this note…

Renfroe Middle School received word early this morning that beloved teacher Stacey Daniel passed away. We do not have specific details regarding her passing at this time. Counselors and leaders from all of the City Schools of Decatur are at Renfroe and Decatur High School to support the teachers, staff and students dealing with the loss of their dear teacher, colleague and friend. We ask that you hold Ms. Daniel’s family, friends and colleagues in your heart during this time as well as current and former Renfroe Middle School students.

Brick Store Boys Opening “Kimball House” in the Decatur Depot

    Decatur Metro | October 29, 2012 | 10:51 am

BREAKING  – Big Monday morning restaurant news here in Decatur!  Dave Blanchard of the Brick Store Pub/Leon’s Full Service fame gives DM the scoop…

The Kimball House Hotel once stood on an entire city block of downtown Atlanta. It played host to famous musicians, athletes, politicians, local heroes and artists as well as scoundrels, vagrants, con men and loose women. As with many of Atlanta’s marvelous old history-laden structures, it was razed in the 1960s. In the spirit of progress and preservation, and as an homage to the barmen who kept the beautiful hotel lounge, we are resurrecting the Kimball House name. The new restaurant and bar, Kimball House, will be located at the historic Railway Depot in Decatur, Georgia. The food will encourage gathering. The drinks will encourage conversation. Kimball House will smell like bacon and taste like seawater.

Much has been done to improve the Atlanta drink scene in the last ten years, especially with beer and cocktails. We hope to contribute to this storyline and offer something new and old along the way. We hope to add to the culinary landscape and cook with the seasons while taking full advantage of our local southern bounty.

At Kimball House the rumble of a nearby train and the constant clatter of the cocktail shaker will barely be distinguishable from the laughter of neighboring tables. It will look like a restaurant but feel like home. No jackets required (except perhaps denim). Dirty jokes lauded. Local heroes, scoundrels, vagrants, con men and loose women all welcome in the Spring of 2013.

Wikipedia’s got some good info on the old first and second Kimball House if you’re interested.
