Anyone know who to contact to get the sidewalk on Scott (along Pinetree, Nelson Ferry, Clarion, Woodlawn) cleared of grass, debris, etc. It is already so close to the cars but feels narrower due to grass growth, etc.

        August 31, 2012 at 7:56 am

It’s the responsibility of the adjacent property owners to keep it clear, so you can either appeal to them in a neighborly way or, if that isn’t possible or practical, you can submit code violations to the city’s website.

Also, you can always call one of your commissioners if it’s a serious threat to safety.

I’ve actually gone out and cleaned the sidewalk next to me. It’s good exercise.

A few weeks ago I posted a question about getting a bath ventilation fan. Someone asked for a report on what happened, so here it is.

I got a few bids and chose a local electrician Gus Whittaker here: http://www.decaturelectricalcontractor.com/
Among other things, he seemed to do a much more thorough evaluation of what would need to be done for the job. And his estimate was MUCH, MUCH more reasonable and affordable than the other estimates. And I found a good review on him as well. So I recommend him; he was a very nice guy too, of course.

The other thing I recommend is that you get a Panasonic ventilation fan, since I’ve learned that these seem to be really good. They get consistently very good reviews, whereas just about all the fans at the big stores around here seem to get very mixed reviews. I didn’t have time to get a Panasonic fan — they can be ordered through Ferguson’s or, maybe easier, through Amazon — but wish I had. Hopefully the one I got will be good though. And for very silent fans (1 “soan” or less), I recommend getting the highest CFM you can, since that can’t hurt and can only help.

OK, that’s what I’ve learned about bath fan ventilation. I hope it helps whoever was wondering.

I hope I am not violating any of the rules for DM Free For All Friday 😉

I want to promote a new lacrosse program at Decatur Active Living for experienced 4th and 5th grade boys and encourage parents to sign their kids up. Stacy sent out an email last week, and a flyer should be coming home today or early next week from FAVE.

Intramural clinic – for boys grades 4-5 (ages 9-10) who have played at least 1 regular season and who are already skilled at the basic fundamentals. This program will focus on the next level of skill development and improving kids’ understanding of game situations and positions, and running set plays. This program will be scheduled from 1:30 to 3:00 on Sundays on Ebster Field.

      Registration #232071-11

Cost: $75 for Decatur residents and $100 for Non Residents

      Date: September 23-October 28 (6 week program)

        August 31, 2012 at 1:28 pm

Is there a Fall Clinic for the younger set, too? I thought I saw a flyer, but now I can’t find it…my son is 7.5 yrs…

        • Lax Dad says:
          August 31, 2012 at 2:13 pm

Yes, there is also a beginners clinic Sundays from 12:00 to 1:30 this fall – same dates and cost but different registration number and it is focused on teaching new players

Can anyone recommend a low cost rain gutter cleaner? Also, is there any truth to the belief that stopped up gutters breed mosquitoes? West Nile?

      • Russ says:
        August 31, 2012 at 9:25 am

I can speak from experience – when we replaced our old gutters and (spent a fortune) on a gutter with a built-in microscreen cover filter, we saw our mosquitos drop by 90%. With these microscreen filters, you do not have to clean the gutters. I’ve found that I never cleaned the gutters frequently enough to prevent water build up. And mosquitos only need a few days of standing water to breed.

        • Russ says:
          August 31, 2012 at 2:19 pm

For those interested, the gutter product we used is called Mastershield. I committed to the big investment to get this installed after doing lots of online research. I’ve had it for 3 years. I have not had to clean my gutters once since then, and there is no buildup at all.

          • Scott says:
            August 31, 2012 at 2:23 pm

What slopes can it handle? I’ve got gutters in two places: one on a sunroom with almost no slope to the roof and one on the house with a high slope. In both cases, I’ve had gutter-solution folks say that whatever they were selling wouldn’t work (not enough flow; too much flow).

I have been told that there is something very manly about cleaning gutters, especially with Southern women. My own experience is that, while cleaning my own gutters, or as part of a Rake&Run fundraiser, quite a few cute little Decatur mommies stop by and watch me while I do my gutter thing on a ladder. Maybe there is something in a woman’s primal psyche that when she sees a man on a ladder, it reminds her of the ancient Greeks warriers storming the walls of Troy.
So basically what I am suggesting is that you NOT get these fancy dandy gutter products but instead, learn to master the ladder, clean the gutters on your own, and see yourself as one of the ancient Greeks doing the impossible.

I have a bunch of junk that I need to clean out of my house… old broken printer, broken slow cooker, destroyed board games with missing pieces, old, ratty toys. Do I just have to wait until the next Super Trash Day? or electronics recycling day?

Do they have a Super Trash Day in the fall or just the spring?

I’d donate some of it to the Salvation Army, but some of it’s broken.

I highly recommend the Bagster. Buy the bag at Ace Hardware, fill it up, and call in for a pickup. If I remember correctly, the bag is $30 and pickup is $100. The bag is big and you can fill that thing with a LOT of stuff. You wouldn’t believe how much it holds.

electronics recycling available in Atlanta every month. Its about 5 miles from

Best Buy will recycle the printer, and I’m pretty sure all their recycling is free now (no charge the last time I took a tv over there). Bag up the game pieces in clear bags or ziplocks and donate– someone looking for replacements or art project stuff will happily buy it! Same goes for any smaller toys that you can batch. If the cooker has a lid or crock insert in good condition, those two items will sell too. Probably better to donate odds & ends kinda stuff at Last Chance or Value Village- they have more shelf/peg space.

        Here’s Best Buy’s recycling info:

Does anyone know what all the commotion was around East Lake Marta and Decatur Square / Library during rush hour last night? There were police everywhere. I couldn’t find anything on the news and I wondered if it might be in connection with the recent string of bank robberies in other parts of the Metro area.

Has anyone else noticed a metallic smell in the air recently? It smells like the by product of industrial manufacturing. I have been aware of one on and off for several weeks. It is not just in Oakhurst, where I live. I will smell it here and continue to notice it when I go north, say to the Emory area. I know that odors can travel many miles on the wind. For instance if there is a fire in another city, we can sometimes smell it here. Does anyone know if there is a factory nearby that could be producing it? It does not seem like something that is healthy to be exposed to long term.

      • Russ says:

I did smell something like that recently around Oakhurst. Smelled like welding to me, but that kind of smoke does not travel very far. I assumed it was a local artist welding in their garage/back yard.

My wife’s office is located where we can watch the parade from above and see it pretty well. My annual routine is to get downtown early on Saturday for the parade and then catch MARTA back to Decatur for the book festival. No question Labor Day weekend has become the biggest weekend of the year in the metro.

No….. it’s a residential street, and if you want to use it as a shortcut, you gotta drive slow so you don’t hit me when I go and get my mail. CAFE BOMBAY on Briarcliff. This is not just my favorite Indian Place, but one of my top 5 places overall. They have an awesome big buffet during the day, and all the food is killer. It’s pricier on the weekend but well worth it. And if it’s just you and the Mr. one night it’s a great date night place, quiet and romantic. Saturday night they have a belly dancer, have anything with lamb, incredibly delicious.. I give this place 10 Stars!

      • J_T says:
        August 31, 2012 at 12:10 pm

Cafe Bombay is great, as Daydreamer said. Just please do NOT get it confused with Planet Bombay farther down Briarcliff/Moreland in Little 5. I’m feeling magnanimous today so I won’t go into all the reasons you should avoid Planet Bombay.

If you’re up for strictly vegetarian and want to try a sampling without the pressure of ordering dishes, Thali in Patel Plaza (where Church splits off from Scott/L’ville Hwy) is a great place to start. They have a buffet for lunch (at least during the week) and thali service for dinner (3 or 4 courses with a few dishes each and you can eat all you want). There always seem to be a few kids there but they are usually of the Indian/Pakistani variety. At $15/person for dinner, you may feel cheated a bit if your kids are not into it, though they may offer a lower price for kids that I’m just not aware of.

If you want to play it slightly safer, Bhojhanic on Clairmont is also excellent. Since I’m sure five other people will recommend it, I won’t bore you with the details…

Okay, I have to give a little credit to Planet Bombay in L5P. In spite of my husband’s GI war story one night in 2006 (and, yes, that’s GI as in gastrointestinal), I can’t help but love a place with a whole glorious section of the menu devoted to tofu. :-)

Locally, there are 3-4 good places in Patel Plaza, and Zyka is across the street, so it’s hard to go wrong around Scott Blvd.

I would recommend that, for your first visit to Indian food, you try a buffet. This was the recommendation given to me by a good friend from Delhi and he was right. You can try all different kinds of things without the pressure of having to pick something that you may end up not liking. Also, don’t be afraid to ask, “What’s this?”. It’s been my experience that the owners/workers are always more than happy to explain everything. Also, be sure to try the naan (flat bread). I think I could make a meal just on that. Indian food is fantastic because there are so many wonderful flavors and aromas. I do lean partially to northern Indian food but you can’t go wrong with any of it. Enjoy!

Great place to start for cable TV detox:
        http://www.dennysantennaservice.com/
Not the best organized site, but tons of information.

Rabbit ears will work in many cases, but a roof top or attic mount antenna might make life easier. There are also plenty of plans out there to make your own antenna if buying one is not in your budget plans. Make Magazine has one that is particularly popular.

We live in Oakhurst and have been using this newfangled “wireless TV” for over 10 years. Was using rabbit ears for most of that but my wife finally made me get an antenna that I have mounted in the attic. Not perfect, but still have a couple of tricks to try.

The big hurdle is you must have a TV that has a digital tuner. If you do not, then you will need a digital to analog coverter box. They can be had for about $40 to $60. Other than that new twist, it’s just like being back in the 1970’s before cable. Put a little wad of foil on your rabbit ears and go.

Would be more than willing to meet for a beer and draw diagrams on cocktail napkins.

I’m sure someone will take you up on your offer, but in case not, here is what you need in as simple a form as possible.

        1. A high speed internet connection and router.

        2. A subscription to Hulu Plus and/or Netflix . I have both; Hulu for current tv episodes, Netflix for past seasons and movies. If I had to pick only one it would be Netflix because it has more content and more robust streaming quality than Hulu.

        3. A device to stream the above to your tv. The $60 Roku is the cheapest and simplest. It will connect wirelessly to your router for the internet and if you have a newish TV you should be able to use a single HDMI cable to connect it to your tv.

        4. If possible, connect an antenna for local channels (I pick up everything but NBC and the PBS stations with a cheap indoor antenna.)

Netflix and Hulu will get you a lot of content, but don’t expect them or any streaming service to fully replace cable. If you’re a big sports watcher I’d stick with cable. One other caveat: Make sure you are getting download speeds of at least 6mbps (check this at http://www.speedtest.net/). More is better.

We do all of this. PBS and NBC need the rabbit ears not the circle antenna (they are the only two that are different), so we have a circle/rabbit ears combo antenna inside the living room and can pick up the locals plus NBC and PBS.

          • brianc says:

“PBS and NBC need the rabbit ears not the circle antenna (they are the only two that are different),”

Interesting. Do you mean you have two separate antennas? My antenna has the circle and the ears but I still can’t get PBS or NBC.

            • LocalMom says:
              August 31, 2012 at 5:14 pm

we have the combo, but to get PBS and NBC we have to extend the two ears to what seems like about 3 ft (and then twiddle a dial on the antenna too). I’m not sure why NBC and PBS are different from the rest of the broadcast channels, but we did some searching around online for advice right before the olympics! :-)

Old school tv’s w/ converter boxes viewer here:

My old cable connection thingies serve as my antennas– definitely no cable, but I screwed them into the converter boxes and voila! I get all the available basic channels, including the PBS stations, on my living room tv and all but CH2 (which has always been a bit glitchy at my house) on the back room tv.

For extras I get by with Hulu basic and whatever the channels want to offer online on my computer, backed up by series dvds from library. (I’m fretting about my fictional honey Bates, though, so I may have to try out Hulu Plus to hurry up seeing the last episodes of Downton Abbey.)

      • Larkspur says:
        September 1, 2012 at 9:30 am

We’ve been cable free for over 7 years. Recommend an antennae in the attic and a netflix subscription. Some cable stations episodes of their shows online and if I really really can’t wait until a series becomes avaliable from Netflix, I very occassionally will buy the season from itunes (if it’s available).

I just asked my 10 year old if she likes not having cable and she said yes, because it would take too long to channel surf.

If you are okay with hills the Decatur Cemetery is quiet and very low traffic. Good access from Glenlake Park.

The S. Peachtree Creek trail from Medlock Park to Mason Mill Park is a nice 1 mile plus, but you will encounter some foot traffic and pets.

Well, there’s the Plastic Toy Park at Nelson Ferry and Ponce. It’s got a circular sidewalk. (Just kidding. Two many toddlers peeing in public and cluttering up the sidewalk.)

I’d recommend the Bike Path–it’s still not totally off-street but there’s long segments that are and you could practice on those–there’s one in Decatur, one from Clarkston to close to Stone Mountain, one through Freedom Park. There’s also Piedmont Park and the Silver Comet Trail (in the ?Mariietta? burbs). And I can’t remember where they are but there’s some really nice roadside bike lanes south of Decatur, e.g. along Hosea Williams and near Arabia Mountain. Or take yourself on a nice vacation to a flat area with tons of bike lanes–e.g. Sanibel Island, St. Simons, St. George. Or even better–the Netherlands!

PATH foundation web site will show you the many off road paths in Atlanta area. for a short practice near Decatur, there is now a new path at Deepdene Park, the park that is encircled by N Ponce de Leon Drive. Its quite flat.

A great trail a lot of folks don’t know about is in DeKalb County’s Arabia mountain park. Parts are flat. Parts are quite hilly. It goes all the way into Rockdale county where there is a lake with a nice picnic spot. It is completely off road although there are a couple of street crossings. the best parking spot is at the Nature Center in the park.

        • Ted says:
          September 1, 2012 at 8:27 am

Thanks for the suggestion on Arabia. I have looked at that on the PATH site and am interested in checking it out. Which legs tend to be more child friendly (ie flat)?

          Thanks!

There is one pretty good long stretch that you’ll notice if you come in from I-20. Passes by a nice farmouse in a meadow. That strectch heading back up toward StoneCrest mall is one of the flatest.

Or, another good flat way is to head out of the parking area and stay left. You’ll be along the highway and then at your first cross over cross onto the otherside of the highway. That stays flat for a while.

There are more flat areas if you come in from the South as well.

I saw someone practicing in the Big H parking lot one afternoon last week. (aka the Family Dollar lot, the Oakhurst Church lot, in downtown Oakhurst) She could have been a person who had not ridden in a few decades. (By that, I mean she was a fully mature adult, not that she was riding poorly.)

Having recently started riding my bike regularly, after neglecting it for quite a few years, I tell you that you will love it. For me, it is resurrecting the sense of power and freedom I had as a 4th grader (which was more than 40 but less than 100 years ago).

      • Diane Loupe says:
        August 31, 2012 at 5:44 pm

Well, first of all, be sure that your bike works, especially the brakes. Then, you can go and ride on the PATH. Be advised, riding on bike paths isn’t always safer than riding on the road… Avoid riding on the sidewalks. Not only is it illegal, but it’s more dangerous. Those folks backing down the driveway aren’t going to be looking for a bike, you gotta steer around pedestrians and broken sidewalks, curbs. There’s Bicycle Tours of Atlanta that does tours of the city, too.

      • Ted says:
        September 1, 2012 at 8:24 am

I’m in a similar situation as you, with the addition of my 10 year-old not being ready for street riding. The PATH options are definitely your best bet, and I would highly recommend the Silver Comet trail as the place to start. While sadly no where near Decatur, it is basically completely flat, shaded, and a really nice place to re-familiarize yourself with biking.

The PATH from Clarkston to Stone Mountain is also a good choice. Some hills (not steep) and all off of the road. We did this last week and the 10 year-old loved it (about 5 miles each way).

        Have fun!

Hope this isn’t the wrong day to post this, but I was just was inspired to try out the new Dekalb County library that has just opened up on S. Candler, as it is actually easier and quicker to get to than the Decatur branch for me (especially on a Friday afternoon). Was pretty impressed…. Only small (basically one open room with desk/kids books/adult books/computers in different parts of the room, which actually does make for great sight lines for when the kids run off), and a bit sterile (it is a brand-new government building after all). However, it is light, airy, clean, well-designed and with a nice friendly atmosphere. It has a pretty large kids selection of books (seemed comparable to the quantity at Decatur, though it was more spaciously laid out). It wasn’t busy and it had all the titles that seem to be permanently checked out at Decatur (cat in the hat books, piggie and elephant books, llama llama red pajama books, goodnight moon etc etc). Doesn’t have all the baby music classes etc either, but I’m going to be going again!

FYI that yesterday’s AJC had a nice piece on the editorial page by Pete Wingard, Avondale Estates resident, formerly of City of Decatur, still with lots of connections to CSD. It’s about what’s lost with the demise of self-contained small towns with local industry. Makes me wonder if urban “small towns” like Decatur are the only kind viable. Will most non-urban small towns just become the suburb of somewhere? Also made me think of the loss from outsourcing former American industries to the parts of the world with cheaper labor. The political and economic implications of free trade and outsourcing to the rest of the world are beyond me but my gut tells me that there’s a loss to communities. And the social, economic, environmental, fairness, and occupational safety issues that some of those industries entailed haven’t been solved, just moved somewhere else, and now we’re left with new problems.
