Yes! Any playground equipment sighted yet? Bus schedule?
there is grass…bushes….b-ball court and nets…sidewalks…parking lot…
no playground equipment but that can’t be too far behind.
VERY exciting!!!
No playground equipment unless pto funds it. Sorry.
really?
I thought this had been a big point of discussion back when the Fifth Avenue plans were coming out and that the plans were changed to include a playground instead of some other kind of court–can’t remember what. Was the promise just for the playground but not for the equipment? I sure don’t remember that.
The initial plan had a sand volleyball court, that all involved (CSD, too) agreed was merely conceptual, and laughable. CSD added playground space to the site plan, but MrFixIt is correct: CSD didn’t commit funds to equipment. I believe this remains the case, so PTA would be the natural alternative for funding. Maybe there’s a grant or charitable source somewhere …
So glad sand volleyball court was nixed. I can just imagine the sand dumped out from tennis shoes every night in every 4/5 home. It was bad enough dealing with the unusable pant bottoms from playing in the Clairemont mudpit.
It’s really looking good over there. Fifth Avenue Elementary was still open when I moved to the neighborhood, and I’m really looking forward to that corner coming alive again.
Whoda thought sod planted mid July in Atlanta would be getting this kind of rain? Hopefully it’s a good omen for the school year to come…
The library books will be moved in next week. Very exciting! (Accepting gifts of Advil.)
Your FAVE librarian, Mrs. Dennis.
And you ARE a fave librarian and media specialist! Thanks! Students love Good-day Glennwood production. Will it be renamed? Fine Day, Fifth Avenue? Front LIne 4/5? Action News, Academy?
Looks very spiffy (as does the rest of the school), BUT:
12 bike racks able to hold about 24 bikes total for all of the 4/5 academy? (I went by the school today and didn’t see any more more bike racks.) Doesn’t that seem a little–actually, a lot–low? How many bike racks does Glennwood have right now, and about how many kids bike to school on nice days?
I don’t remember Glennwood having a lot of rack space but it had a huge long railing that kids were allowed to park their bikes along and lock if they had the long chain kind of lock. U-locks would have been harder. Most kids left their bikes unlocked and I don’t remember hearing about any thefts. Does Fifth Avenue have a railing or fence that can be used? There were way more than 24 bikes some days at the 4/5 at Glennwood, especially during the warm part of the fall.
I’d have to look again, but I don’t remember seeing any other big likely suspects for bike parking. My son’s bike was stolen at Oakhurst Elementary last year (during a weekend though) when we forgot to lock it up. It’s pretty low to steal a 7-year-old’s bike, but it happens.
Playground Funding has been left to the PTO. A committee is forming to develop a funding plan (including fundraising from individuals and businesses as well as grants) and work on design.
To determine what we’ll need/want, we’ll set up opportunities for community input. We’ve also done some observations of how our kids used the Glennwood playground and also at some playgrounds at other schools.
This is a big project for sure! Folks should be prepared for several months. We know our community will support the idea that Play Matters for the health, spirit and learning of our children. Our committee could use a few more members, especially with fundraising and grant writing expertise. Contact [email protected] for more information.
How are the going to back in to that laoding dock?
