Decatur’s Fourth of July Plans
Decatur Metro | June 29, 2011 | 9:54 amAt the last Decatur city commission meeting, City Manager Peggy Merriss quipped that unlike in year’s past, this year’s Fourth of July celebration would take place on the actual holiday. So keep that in mind before you stake out a spot on First Christian’s lawn on Saturday night, only to find the only entertainment is watching drivers get exasperated over the painfully long light at Nelson Ferry/Northern and Ponce.
From the city’s Visit Decatur website…
Join Decatur’s July 4th Pied Piper Parade as it winds through downtown Decatur. Decorate your wagon, ride your bike, skate, or walk in this event.
The City Commissioners will lead the parade in the mini-firetruck. Neighborhoods and organizations are encouraged to make floats and join the fun.
Parade line-up is at the First Baptist Church of Decatur at 5:30 p.m. The parade begins at 6 p.m. It ends at the Community Bandstand on the square with a presentation of colors and the Star Spangled Banner.
Anyone may participate in the parade but those with vehicles must register by completing the July 4th Pied Piper Parade Guidelines form.
The concert, featuring the Callanwolde Concert Band, begins at 7 p.m. in the Community Bandstand. Fireworks begin at dark (approximately 9 p.m.) and are shot from the top of the DeKalb County parking deck.
Avondale’s July 4th plans – which includes fireworks at dusk over the lake – are detailed over on the city’s website.
After the jump, check out the details of this year’s July 4th weekend Sidewalk Sale all around the city.
Hey, boys and girls, forecast is for a high of 97 on the Fourth. Let’s try to keep it cool out there.
Sigh…gonna be hot as hell at the Peachtree Road Race that morning. I need to invest in a 70’s-era terry cloth headband.
Makes me wish the Pied Piper Parade was at 9 AM vs 6 PM. It’s almost always scorching hot for the Parade. Both the participants and observers are fairly limp, hot, sweaty, and frazzled at that point in the day.
+1
I agree. I think we should move the 4th of July to November.
No, no, no, no, no….please do not add to the never-ending October-New Year’s holiday period of Halloween/Thanksgiving/Christmas/New Year’s with all the festivities and school and family obligations. If we move it to cooler weather, please make it in February, March, or September, months that tend to have less holiday obligation overload.
I have all that plus three kids’ birthdays from October to December.
My sympathies. And you can’t throw them all into the pool for a pool party that time of the year!
We have 3 major family birthdays in January so I really don’t relax until after Valentine’s Day! But Christmas is what does me in–the family, personal, religious, school, charity, cultural expectations all coincide in such a way that I find it a hard time to enjoy. I trudge through it with a holiday sweater and fake smile on me. Switching Christmas and the Fourth of July would suit me fine.
As far as I know the 4th of July is the only holiday that always stays on the 4th of July. It never moves to Monday unless like this year it naturally occurs!
don’t you hate it when they try to make halloween trick-or-treating a weekend affair when it falls on a school night?
I remember that happening one year; going out on Monday and most of one neighborhood said they gave out all their candy Saturday night.
January 1 😉
Dang! 97?! It is going to be a long hot day for the fireworks crew this year.
