    Planting Flags

    Decatur Metro | May 30, 2011 | 4:02 pm

    Chris writes in…

My son and I usually plant a few flags on my father’ grave and other veterans I have known over the years. We had an extra one this year and decided to leave it at the grave of Goodrich Cook White Jr. I don’t know if his parents, brothers or sisters are still living in Decatur, but I can only guess that Goodrich was greatly loved by his family. On this Memorial Day weekend, I hope the citizens of Decatur can take some time to remember that we have a long line of patriots, dating back to the Revolutionary War, who died for our freedom.

This might be the son of one of Emory’s presidents:

What a great way to celebrate Memorial Day.

Maybe next Memorial Day, those who are interested can meet at the rock memorial at the cemetery entrance and decorate the graves of those killed in combat with flowers and flags.

Love that idea, Chris. Hopefully, we can remember this suggestion for Memorial Day 2012

To my knowledge, there is not a list of veterans in Decatur Cemetery per se who were killed in combat, just a fairly complete list of all veterans. Do you have such a list of combat casualties?

Why not honor all veterans, not just those who died in combat?

        That’s Veterans Day, November 11.
