Last Push – We Need Just $230 To Give Another Student the “Tools to Success”
Decatur Metro | March 31, 2011 | 4:04 pmWe’re getting close to the end of the school year, so it’s time to close out the DM & DEF “Tools to Success” fundraising effort that aims to put laptop computers in the hands of students from low-income households with plans for college or another post-secondary school.
Decatur Metro has already put up the money for one laptop, which will be handed out to a student, selected by the “Tools to Success” committee, at this year’s DHS scholarship dinner. To the many DM readers who’ve already donated, “Thank you so much!”. We now need just $230 to purchase that second laptop.
With so much of the world’s information and communication now online, can you imagine the difference a personal laptop can make to a student in 2011? Instead of needing to block out hours of time during the day to drive/ride/walk to the library and do research and write email questions to profs on a buggy, communal PC, a laptop with an internet connection has the potential to make the higher education experience just a LITTLE bit easier for a Decatur High grad, giving them those critical extra hours a week for studying, researching and relaxing.
OK, enough from me. Here’s how you can help out.
To donate to the laptop cause, all you have to do is click on over to the Decatur Education Foundation’s “Donate Page”, fill in the amount you wish to give, select “General Fund” for your gift designation, and then make sure you write “laptops” in the “Additional Comments” field at the very bottom of the page. If you’d rather mail a check, you’re welcome to send it – made out to the Decatur Education Foundation – to 315 W. Ponce de Leon Avenue Suite 770 Dec 30030. Obviously indicate “laptops” on your check.)

Thanks DM and DM readers – this great new program, Tools to Success, allows DEF to harness community resources and remove obstacles to academic success. Thank you for your generous spirit!
I donated! That’s one for the liberal yuppies! How about a contest to see who can donate more–the Decatur crunchy, liberal, farm to table, MARTA lovers or the token Republican, no more government, free rangers.
Good job, Karass. With your inspiration, I, too, donated. Count me among the Otherwise Unaffiliated Decaturites.
I don’t respond to challenges from liberals about my charitable deductions. I’m perfectly comfortable with the amount of charitable giving and activities I perform.
I also keep quiet about what I give. I don’t need to publicly pat myself on the back when I do.
Unlike the cheese-hating. That needs to be shouted from the rooftops.
This isn’t back-patting, it’s healthy business competition! We can set up the teams differently–how about people peeved about children vs. those peeved about animals? UGA vs Georgia Tech fans? Fellini vs. Mellow Mushroom lovers?
Or if folks donate better anonymously, modestly, with no fanfare, that’s cool too. I think it’s exciting that we are on to laptop #3.
And it’s well understood that everyone makes their own personal choices on charity. I used to work somewhere where one of the big brass would always pressure us to help out with Paideia fundraisers and volunteering events. It was real uncomfortable. But this is a blog–if you don’t want to respond, don’t! If friendly, voluntary, anonymous competition brings in some funds for DEF…what’s the harm?
Well, bully for you, DTR.
We have already surpassed the goal for laptop #2 and are well on our way to laptop #3! Keep ’em coming DM readers!
Does it make me a bad person if I say that I wish it was either “Tools to Succeed” or (better) “Tools for Success?”
Nope.
