Fox Bros. Opening “The Big Tex Cantina” in Downtown Decatur

Oh my poor waistline.

The Blissful Glutton reports that the Fox. Brothers, Jonathan Fox and brother Justin are opening “The Big Tex Cantina” in the old Natalie’s Fish House and Paris space in downtown Decatur.

According to Blissful, Big Tex will allow the Bros. “more room to play around with the Texican menu”…

Look for items such as chicken fried steak, homemade corn dogs, stacked enchiladas (their mom’s recipe), tacos, chalupas and more. The Cantina will be open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and late-night. Jonathan maintains the restaurant will still be family friendly despite having a fully-stocked bar and a pool room complete with darts.

She reports a late Winter, early Spring opening.

P.S.  I received a report that Natalie’s had closed a few weeks back, but was gun-shy to report it since it didn’t actually close the last time it…umm…closed.  So I was trying to get confirmation first, which never came.  So I guess this is it!

  1. Nice, we need a true tex mex place, and Fox Bros. knows what they are doing…some more trips to the gym…

  2. “…stacked enchiladas (their mom’s recipe)…”

Wow. Makes my mouth water just thinking of it.

  3. Community Que is so much better than Fox Bros IMHO. I live much closer to Fox but prefer to head over to Community Que because the service at Fox Bros is kinda lousy and the food is a bit inconsistent.

    1. I haven’t experienced lousy service or inconsistent food (at least not after the first year) at Fox Bros. I have experienced some hefty wait times because they’re so often packed.

I just had lunch today at Community Q. It was my second visit. I find their pork to be utterly lacking in smoke flavor. I did enjoy their collards.

I’ll definitely be upping my gym visits and neighborhood runs in anticipation of this new establishment, which is in walking distance from my office!

    2. This is why they always say, “there’s no accounting for taste.” I live much closer to Community BBQ, and have eaten there once, but probably will not go back simply because I don’t like “watery” barbecue sauce, and think their barbecue meat lacks flavor. That’s not to say that their sauce is “bad” or “wrong” — it’s just not my thing. I love the spicier, smokier flavors at Fox Brothers, and also love the selection of side items and beers they have. It’s nice that we have the “problem” of so many nearby restaurant choices!

    3. I feel compelled to hop on this bandwagon.

I couldn’t disagree more with Aimee. Fox Bros is AWESOME!!! I have always received fast and friendly service, but the food is what keeps me coming back. It’s very consistent for BBQ. Of the dozens of times I’ve eaten there over the years, I can only recall a handful of visits where the ribs or wings were a little overcooked and dry. And you can’t beat their great taste in music! Wish they’d set up a BBQ pit on shakedown after the shows. 😉 Too bad they don’t have live bands there very often. Hopefully they will in the new space.

Can’t wait for “The Big Tex Cantina”!!!

  4. So glad something fantastic will be replacing Nathalie’s Fish House. That place was the worst.

    1. Actually the worst was Levi’s which Nathalie’s replaced. The one time I ate there the expo wiped his forward with the same towel he 1) carrying ’round his neck and 2) wiped his head on.

  5. Speaking of restaurants coming to Decatur, has there been any update on your reporting of the Jimmy John’s opening in the old Tastings space? There are still “for lease” signs in the windows.

Also, isn’t a pita place moving in to the old Blimpie spot? I haven’t seen any action in that space either.

I hear about all of these great new options, and I wonder about how long it takes to open a new spot in Decatur, and if Winter/Spring isn’t ambitious for opening this new cantina.

    1. Actually it is the old Quizno’s spot and they are well under way with the demoing of the old space.

    2. Hey, I thought it was to be in the old Tasting’s space, too– glad to know I wasn’t imagining things. Also glad to know that JJ’s is actually underway!

      1. Pita something or the other with alliteration is going in Quizno’s. I saw the sign just yesterday, which is obviously why I remember the name so well.
