UPDATE: Here’s the press release…
DECATUR, Ga. Sept. 1, 2009 – Decatur just got a little bit sweeter. Piece of Cake, Atlanta’s largest cake company, today opened a new store in Decatur.
Located at 307-A East College Ave., Piece of Cake’s new Decatur store is the company’s third retail location in metro Atlanta. Other stores are located at 3215 Roswell Road in Buckhead and 10971 Crabapple Road, Suite 1300 in Roswell. The Decatur shop is located near the intersection of East College Avenue and South Candler Street, next door to the children’s boutique Wiggle.
“We’ve been looking at Decatur for a long time and have seen an increase in customers from that area at our other stores,” said Melissa Bunnen, founder of Piece of Cake. “Decatur is a special, close-knit community, and we’re really looking forward to being part of it. We feel like Piece of Cake will be a great fit.”
Piece of Cake got its start in 1985 when they began baking luscious, three-layer iced cakes like “Mom” and “Grandma” used to make and delivering them throughout metro Atlanta. Today, it is the city’s largest cake bakery and delivery company. Cakes come in a variety of tantalizing flavors like white chocolate with cream cheese pecan frosting, chocolate and yellow cakes with chocolate frosting, as well as caramel, carrot, red velvet, coconut and even orange cakes. Customers can also try one of the “Cake of the Month” specials such as strawberry cake (May-August) and the decadent peanut butter cake (September-October), as well as delicious pound cakes in several flavors. To order, call 800-9-CAKE-90, 404-351-CAKE, or visit www.pieceofcakeinc.com. Cakes can also be shipped anywhere in the country.
Susannah Eatz, manager of the Decatur store, noted, “At Piece of Cake, customers can walk right in and buy a cake made fresh that day without having to pre-order. We bake all of our cakes from scratch and frost them by hand. Plus we have lots of other goodies to try.”
Like the other locations, the Decatur store features other baked goods and gift packages including slices of Piece of Cake’s popular layer cakes, chocolate cream cheese brownies, cheddar cheese straws, Banbury tarts, oversized chocolate chip cookies and blueberry pound cake with a luscious lemon glaze.
Hours of operation for the Decatur store are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Call 404-378-8585 for more information or send e-mail to [email protected]
I am so excited!! I needed a cake for this weekend and called the Buckhead location trying to find out when they were going to open…they weren’t sure but told me it would be this week. Now I can order my cake and pick it up in my own neighborhood.
By the way, I recommend the chocolate chip pound cake. Great breakfast or dessert. Or the red velvet cake…oh, and the carrot cake is to die for. I think I am gaining weight just thinking about the icing on the carrot cake…must order….Thanks DM (and Piece of Cake) – you made my day!
Oh, and Gmail is working again.
Is it commonly known, or where does one park over there? Why don’t they inlcude that info in the press release?
There’s a small lot behind the building that’s pretty commonly known.
Do they sell simple retail cupcakes and the like or just big orders?
How does this place (or its other locations) compare to Southern Sweets, my current favorite?
*sigh* Banbury tarts…coconut layer cake…mmmmmm! I can see I’m going to have to plug the treadmill back in.
Finally! I am very excited, although I think it may be too late to order the seasonal (and to-die-for!) Strawberry Layer Cake. boo! Guess I’ll have to settle for my 2nd favorite – the White Chocolate Layer Cake. And I may have to give that Chocolate Chip Pound Cake a try…
Is it my imagination or has the cake thing, cup variety and all, taken its place up there with pizza joints in the ‘really?…more?’ category? I do understand that it a passion for those that love it, as is evidenced by this already drooling thread, but come on. Sawicki’s awesome treats, Button Cakes at Cafe Cliche’ & Taste, Pastries A-Go-Go, Southern Sweets, The Farmer’s Market, Kroger has some and throw in those phatty cakes from Cakes & Ale and the calories are starting to add up.
Okay, after all that, I’m going to have to order that carrot cake from Piece of Cake…I’m hungry!
😉
Agreed, Marc.
Between our pubs with the fancy (non-light) beers, our bakeries with cupcakes galore, and the plethora of pizza shops we run the risk of becoming a town of lard-you-know-whats.
On the plus side (pun not intended), with all that wonderful beer, cake and pizza, we’ll be very happy lard-you-know-whats.
Healthy Yogurt Tap, coffee shops, and salads at Cafe Cliche are nice antedotes to the butter/lard! We can alternate! But curious that Tossed didn’t make it here…..methinks we doth protest too much about active, healthy living. (Notice the reference to several other threads!)
I think Tossed suffered from overpriced, mediocre salads. There are still plenty of places to go have a light lunch/salad in Decatur (Watershed, Cafe Alsace, Parker’s On Ponce, Sushi Avenue and Nectar in Oakhurst all come to mind).
I’m actually more worried about all the ice cream places. Have yet to venture into Relics & Rarities, but will be taking the kids there this weekend. Bring on the butter fat!
Tossed also had a very sterile, cafeteria feel to it. I kept wanting to take the family there more but we never really enjoyed ourselves. To me, that’s the trick–to provide a healthy alternative for families. The kind of healthy, earthy, upscale food that adults like is often spicey or seasoned in ways that kids don’t like or has weird textures that freak out picky eaters. In our travels, we occasionally have found kid-friendly salad- and vegetable-based places but I can’t think of anything similar here in Atlanta that my kids like.
Go check out Nectar, if you haven’t already. Fantastic salads, sandwiches and juices. Very kid-friendly veggie stuff.
try the white chocolate cake. trust me on this.
MMM cake and Pizza!
although i am a big opponent of office birthday “recognitions” (it’s like living in a dilbert cartoon or an office space clip), my office gets cakes from their buckhead location. the choice of cake is quite persuasive in swaying my cynicism.
this stuff is better than thick bacon and sex …. at the same time.
“Thick bacon and sex…at the same time.” I won’t ask you to explain how you know this, Brad Steele. I’ll just say that was a very…*bradly*…statement to make.
Told you he was in porn.
Count me in, then!
Cupcakes or porn?
I am heading over today with my baby and my credit card.
