    President Kiss Agrees to Six More Years at Agnes Scott College

    Decatur Metro | August 31, 2010 | 9:52 am

    From Agnes Scott’s Communication Office…

    Elizabeth Kiss will remain president of Agnes Scott College for the next six years, at the request of the Board of Trustees.

    “These last four years have been transformative for Agnes Scott,” said Clyde Tuggle, chair of the board. “Since President Kiss took the helm in 2006, the college’s reputation has grown, attracting more diverse, high-caliber students and faculty and drawing more donor support. Additionally, President Kiss has placed a high priority on environmental and workplace sustainability, fulfilling the college’s mission to ‘live honorably.’ She has our full support as she continues to build on the college’s extraordinary legacy.”

    “It’s been a wonderful four years,” said President Kiss. “In addition to the talented and dedicated students, faculty, staff and alumnae who have become such a large part of my life these past few years, Agnes Scott itself continues to amaze me with its power to transform lives for the better. My husband, Jeff, and I are honored to continue to be a part of the Agnes Scott community, and we’re excited about the college’s future.”

    Agnes Scott Faculty Vote to Discontinue Masters in Teaching Degree

    Decatur Metro | May 21, 2010 | 2:46 pm

    In a note to alumnae yesterday, Agnes Scott College President Elizabeth Kiss announced that the college’s faculty had recently voted to discontinue the Masters of Arts in Teaching degree at the end of the 2010-2011 school year and “focus exclusively on our undergraduate minor in educational studies, established in 2008”.

    In her letter, Kiss notes that while the program has been around since 1992, and the quality of the program remains “superb”, its viability has been influenced by the following factors:

    • Changes in the teacher certification process, especially Georgia’s decision to authorize quick routes to certification through the Teacher Alternative Preparation Program (TAPP), making full-time M.A.T. programs less appealing and affordable;
    • Increasing competition from new, less expensive online programs;
    • Elimination of the Georgia HOPE Teacher Scholarship Loan Program in the state budget, which up until this year provided all of our Georgia M.A.T. students nearly $10,000 in forgivable loans;
    • Continuing cuts in state and local funding for education, making it more difficult for Agnes Scott to place M.A.T. graduates who are seeking teaching positions.

    Kiss closes by stating that Agnes Scott remains committed to educating future teachers, and is looking at future partnerships for undergraduates between colleges and continuing projects like the Fugees Academic Boot Camp for refugee children.

    From an Agnes Scott press release…

    Former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright will deliver keynote remarks at Agnes Scott College’s 121st commencement on May 8.

    Albright was the 64th Secretary of State of the United States. As the first female to be named to that position, she became at that time, the highest ranking woman in the history of the U.S. government.

    “Dr. Albright has been a true trailblazer for women in our country and around the world,” said Agnes Scott President Elizabeth Kiss. “Her record of leadership, public service and commitment to creating a more just and humane world makes her a perfect role model for Agnes Scott students.
