The City of Decatur sent out this announcement with details…
The Citizens Fire Academy (CFA) is an exciting way to learn about firefighting and EMS work. It allows the community to see the way the fire department responds to various emergencies. Through a well-prepared curriculum, taught once a week for 6 weeks, students will learn about all aspects of fire operations. Academy participants will meet many of the men and women who serve in the Fire Department as they explain the functions of officers, investigators, administrators, and firefighters. Academy participants will also learn how fire personnel are trained and how one can protect against emergencies and fire hazards. Interesting demonstrations will illustrate the many skills and knowledge fire fighters must have to effectively protect Decatur.
An important and exciting phase of the Academy is the opportunity to leave the classroom and view firefighting work first hand by riding with firefighters on duty.
Applicants must submit to a limited background investigation by the Decatur Police Department that will include a check of criminal history and driving record. Students must be a minimum of 18 years of age by the first day of class. Class space is limited, but a waiting list will be held for future classes should the demand exceed available space.
The Citizens Fire Academy is an excellent class to take if you want to become informed about firefighter procedures, fire prevention, investigation, medical emergencies and fire safety. It also gives Decatur residents and those affiliated with Decatur an opportunity to develop working relationships with our Public Safety staff. If you are interested in completing an application for the May/June class please contact Captain Ninetta Violante at 404-947-0522 or email [email protected] .
THE DATES OF THE 2015 CFA ARE THURSDAY, May 7 – THURSDAY, June 11, 2015. CLASS TIMES ARE 6:30 PM – 9:00 PM.

Brookhaven recently signed a deal with Decatur to handle fire marshal inspections and permitting.
Brookhaven will pay $40 an hour for the service. DeKalb County had handled the work previously, processing about 600 building permits every year. The county will continue to provide fire and rescue services to Brookhaven.
