I’ve been listening to a great low power FM station, WVMO 98.7 in Monona Wisconsin. http://wvmo.fm/

If Lake Wobegon had a radio station, it would sound like this. Americana music, local people singing jingles, and folksy neighborhood updates that reflect a real unique sense of place. If they didn’t do such a good job of passing along weather warnings, I might consider moving there (just outside Madison).

Has the City of Decatur ever had a local radio station? Wouldn’t that be fun? I think we’ve always been somewhat Lake Wobegonish, which is both a positive and a negative.

Decatur had a local station WXLL which, if I recall correctly was located in the building that now houses Dancing Goats. It later became WPBC 1310AM, with various foreign language programs until it went dark last year. It’s broadcast tower is/was in the Avondale MARTA parking lot, which will soon be taken down as part of the new complex going in there. But if you drive by on the Talley street side, you can still see a small shack and tower where they broadcast from.

There is also a multicultural station WATB 1420AM on North Decatur Road near 285 that leases airtime to many groups including a lot of daytime Jamaican programming.

But no stations with that Lake Wobegon sensibility. The station I referenced above is from Monona Wisconsin and I had it on during a family gathering recently. My sister heard it as Winnona and said “does your neighborhood have a radio station now too?” Maybe someday.

WMLB – 1690AM is a great local station, complete with recordings of bird calls to fill breaks. It is “licensed to” Avondale Estates, but I don’t think the station has infrastructure there.

OMG, I love this. Watch the founding story for starters. Then you can watch an hour and 15 min presentation on how they got it off the ground!

Beautiful new sidewalk and reconstructed corner at northeast side of Coventry and Scott intersection! The new squared-off corner is no longer so conducive to drivers sliding up into a right hand turn before they even notice the “No Right on Red” sign, never mind pedestrians who may be walking in the sidewalk. However, why hasn’t the “No Right on Red” sign been put back up? It’s even less safe for turning right on red because the visibility to the left is less now. I like the new intersection and think it’s much safer for people living in the area, walking along Coventry or Scott, especially the little ones walking to Westchester. But the “No Right on Red” sign should be put back up so there’s no confusion. It’s not safe to turn right on red there.

Have noticed yard signs about a “Stand up for Democracy” rally on the square this Saturday. I was wondering whether this is a homegrown effort or nationally coordinated. I’m all for it, either way, just curious if anyone can provide backstory.

There’s some strong comments about it on Decaturish. I would like more back story too.

Had to go look at those comments. I love that they start off with a Trump supporter complaining of protest fatigue.

I wish I hadn’t read your comment and then gone over to read the comments on Decaturish. Now I’m sad and kicking myself for disobeying my own rule of “Never read the comments!”, except on Decatur Metro of course.

      Some random thoughts:
      1. I miss the Yogurt Tap. I wonder if they could sell some of their recipes for us to make at home.

      2. The new crosswalks are a disappointment to me for several reasons. First, I don’t think they are holding up well, either in coloration or in application. The white is already discolored. I’ve also noticed chipping on some of the ends. I hope there is a warranty. Second, I think that they don’t provide great notice to drivers. At the big application on Ponce and Clairmont, it’s hard for drivers to notice the raised intersection, so I see a number of cars bottoming out. On several others, it still requires the sign in the middle of the road for drivers to see it.

      3. Where is all of the debate about the new school and possible re-alignment? That topic should have hundreds of posts, especially from Oakhurst residents, who could get jobbed.

I’m not quite up to speed yet, but I plan on attending the March 13 meeting and will spend some time this weekend looking at the resources found here: http://www.dejongrichter.com/csdecatur/

Speaking of that location, does anyone have any experience with the Trinity Church that meets in that same strip mall? It is affiliated with the Anglican Church of North America, which seems oddly conservative (ie homophobic) for Decatur.

I know this has been asked frequently, but is anyone holding out for Google Fiber? I have been delaying kicking Uverse to the curb on the carrot of Google Fiber is coming. AT&T Fiber is available now, and am thinking FIber is Fiber and that Google’s offer is a little like vaporware.

I’m in the same boat… still have Uverse but looking at AT&T Fiber. The message that I get on Google Fiber’s website when I type in my Decatur address is that “Sign-ups are coming” but I can’t remember if it’s always said that or if the message has changed over these months.

I am in a holding pattern too. There was a recent discussion on Nextdoor about switching to fiber. I recall a guy mentioned that your existing devices and wall cable may need to be upgraded to take full advantage of the speed. Those aren’t things I had considered before.

While we are talking about construction, what is the groundwork that is being done by the transmission shop next to the glassblowing place on Commerce just south of the railroad tracks?
