Those make great tables.
Looks like some serious fiber!
Is this At&T? I thought most of the Google Fiber stuff was underground . . . these spools look like they are paying out up to the poles where AT&T has been expanding their fiber offering.
I believe this is AT&T and they already have fiber running down the streets. The only thing left (cable wise) for AT&T to run is the ‘drop cable’ to your house. I peeked at the cable design and it appears that is what they are stringing up. This is their attempt to protect against Google Fiber by offering much higher speeds and they needed the ‘last mile drop’ to achieve this. It will be interesting how Google will deliver their Fiber in Decatur.
All that matters is that there is a fiber line run into your neighborhood. Google and AT&T will both have the ability to get its product to you through that same line. Each company does not run its own line. As for above ground vs. underground, if your utility lines are already underground, the fiber line will be run underground. If they are already on a utility pole, the fiber line will be strung on the pole. Didn’t Google already install a fiber hut in Decatur earlier this year?
I think Birdmon might be on the right track. AT&T was definitely the company running fiber underground on some streets and above ground on other streets throughout Winnona Park earlier in the year. Krutz do you think AT&T is going to let Google have access the fiber they just installed in Winnona Park? I can’t believe that. I watched the guy string the fiber cable down our street. His truck had a AT&T logo on the door. What’s in it for AT&T to beat Google to market if in the end they have to share the pipe with Google?
According to the crews that were working in my neighborhood, there is a partnership between Google and AT&T to get fiber in as many places as they can as soon as they can. They’ve been splitting the costs of installation by installing one line that serves both companies.

AT&T and Comcast are trying to be first, that’s what companies with an inferior service do. They’ll want customers to sign 2 year or longer contracts so they’re already locked in once Google launches their service.
I’m waiting for Google, it’s a good price point and they will offer 1GB download and upload speeds with no cap on data usage.
The others may offer 1GB download speeds, but offer much slower upload speeds and they have a cap on monthly data usage.
I hope they’ll all share the fiber lines, but I’m skeptical unless the regulators require them to do so.
It’s good we’ll have a competitive marketplace for fiber!
Yeah, it’s not just a matter of speed. Comcast has had a 1 gigabit+ product for a while now (though marketed primarily to businesses). But the pricing is ridiculous, and well — it’s Comcast. So I look forward to the speed, but also to the vastly improved customer service, lack of data caps, better TV product, and other benefits that Google will bring.
The fiber sharing is news to me. I kind of hope that is the case since AT&T ran fiber on our street weeks ago, and if we don’t have to wait for Google to run their own, I’ll be able to sign up with them that much sooner.
