Poor, sad square needs some new sod/mulch/astro turf…indoor outdoor carpet, recycled persian rugs…something!

Didn’t the City “renovate” this lawn last year?

Yep. Should have just put down a deep layer of wood chips. That would look better than how is looks now; plus would have probably saved $.

Is it just the lighting or is the board rotated 90 degrees?
The corner square nearest the photographer should be dark, not light for chess.

Yep, the table is set up wrong. Gotta bring your own chairs or play standing up.

Uh oh. Can the city get a replacement that works? This is such a great idea that I hate for it to be wrong. Of course the type of people that walk around with a set of chess pieces on them probably also have a couple of spare folding chairs along.

Or you could bring your own board.

I get yall are chess nerds, but how can it possibly matter? maybe the names of the squares/conventions might be off, but play has got got to be identical.

I get this isn’t ‘Nam and there has to be rules, but perhaps someone could enlighten me.

Doesn’t matter in least, as long as you put the white king to the right of the right queen, and the Black King to he left of the Black Queen. It isn’t a “standard” chess table, but it doesn’t really ruin anything.

Nice story in Creative Loafing about community chess boards.
