Report: “National Mattress Retailer” Coming to Scott Boulevard Chevron Site

    Decatur Metro | January 11, 2016 | 3:20 pm
    chevron site
Back in August, the Medlock Area Neighborhood Association website notified the neighborhood that the Chevron gas station across from Suburban Plaza was up for redevelopment by Lighthouse Realty Advisors, who reportedly wanted to build a 6,000 square foot retail building at the site.

Now, Tomorrow’s News Today reports that he’s heard a “national mattress retailer” will be moving into the new development…

Sources tell me that a “national mattress retailer” has signed a lease for 4,000 square feet in the center.  A “national wireless carrier” is reportedly in lease negotiations for the remaining 2,000 square feet.  If, as I’d say it’s safe to assume, the “national mattress retailer” ends up being Mattress Firm, it would be only a mile from the company’s huge, SuperCenter/Clearance store at North Decatur and Clairmont Roads.

An existing SunTrust ATM will reportedly be rebuilt and relocated as part of the new center.
TNT reports that the new construction should be completed by summer.
My how that area is changing!

And everyone seemed to be upset about Walmart coming in, but no one is having a hissy fit about this or the development where the Baptist church was at!

        It’s a class thing.

So are you saying if you shop at Walmart you have no class?!

Just an observation. The folks who were so upset over WM were totally silent when YDFM raped the landscape and said nothing about their HR policies, which arguably are worse than WM.

              Can a tree consent?

                No, but county zoning can.

You keep saying that. In your opinion, what can trees be taken down for? If it was for another mixed use development, or a Target, etc., I could understand. However, this is for a market that will be the envy of the country. No exaggeration, it will be incredible. And it will continue to employ recent immigrants. And more of them.

Jesus, what would have to be built for you to accept some clearing of land? Not all growth and progress is bad.

A parking lot is not “development”. And, YDFM business practices continue to not impress me.

Parking is some of it, but not the majority. They are building huge new structures that will house the retail part of the market. Google “Your Dekalb Farmers market expansion” for site plans. But yes, there was clearing for parking…..at what will be the most impressive market in the country.

Not no one. YDFM has a sometimes scary history which I know that people have pointed out.

The reason Wal Mart gets so much hatred is because it is a despicable company in so many ways and to great degrees, from discrimination policies, to underpaying, to targeting local businesses for destruction, to environmental issues, to slave labor, and just about any bad thing that a company can do (not to mention political affiliations, which are arguably a matter of whether or not you align with the party they support), Wal Mart is not just an EXAMPLE of a company that screws over the world for the benefit of a few, it is a LEADER in doing so.

Saying it’s a “class thing” is just ad hominem.

But it was Tar-zhay, which does all those same despicable things, there wouldn’t be near the same outcry. And don’t pretend there would be. Class ain’t all of it, but you can’t say it ain’t part of it.

A friend who’s a real estate agent tells me that Walmart is usually not mentioned in promotional maps for properties for sale. She showed me a brochure for a new development (large, expensive houses) in Chamblee that had a detailed listing of nearby retailers. It included a Whole Foods that is yet to be built, but omitted the existing Walmart Supercenter that’s almost right next to it. I’m fairly certain the omission has little to do with Walmart’s labor practices.

But this one will feature locally-sourced, organic mattresses.

I’d personally rather see something else, as I won’t be shopping for a mattress very often…. I also noticed that there is a mattress store in the old Six Star Subaru place.

And there’s one in the Bicycle South/Rainbow Grocery shopping plaza where Party City used to be. I’ve never understood why Party City didn’t get enough business but the mattress store does. I never see anyone in the mattress store, not staff, not customers. Other than a crib mattress, I’ve only bought a mattress new twice in my entire life. Despite a boring life, I’ve partied way more than that. Not to mention bought Halloween costumes and Fourth of July decorations.

There’s no Sleep Number store close by.

Pretty sure most “mattress stores” are just covers for some kind of intricate money laundering scheme…just like the “used car lots” and the “chipotle”…

Note that the owner of the Chevron Station is the owner of the property and made the decision to redevelop the property, which he plans to keep. The Medlock Area Neighborhood Association (MANA) has encouraged them to look for other uses besides mattress stores and cell phone providers, but zoning can only go so far with dictating use, not tenants. The mattress store is willing to pay the high rents they’ll be charging. At least there won’t be more in/out traffic associated with this new development. More information on the development here: http://www.medlockpark.org/2016/01/mattress-store-wireless-provider-coming.html.
