Signs are appearing around Decatur.
But these aren’t your garden variety, “Stay Off the Lawn”, “Dogs Should Poop Elsewhere” signs. The Decatur Arts Alliance posted the pic above on Twitter a few days back, promising more in the coming days. The one above is hung Clairemont near the Decatur Visitors Center.
And here’s another right off Decatur Square, courtesy of Daren…
Where did they come from?
Well, we’ve heard that these signs were erected by the artist Larry Holland and Gerry Gorman in conjunction with the Decatur Arts Alliance. Mr Holland was also responsible for the animal crossing signs and organizing the secret doors throughout the city over the past year.
The Arts Alliance’s Angie Macon tells us the quotes all come from books, poems and songs of Georgia artists and writers. They are using the hashtag #gawrites, if you’re planning to snap a picture and post it on the internets in the coming days.
Take a walk on this beautiful afternoon and check them out!
“Planet Claire.” One of my all-time favorite songs from one of my all-time favorite albums.
B-52s is one of my five favorite bands of all time. Impossible to listen and be sad.
Fun Fact: It’s named for someone who is currently a resident of Decatur.
There’s someone in Decatur named “Planet?”
Odd name.
Any art project that includes the B-52s and James Dickey is OK with me. Makes me proud to live in Georgia. #GAwrites
Woah! Just yesterday morning as I was driving my 5 and 8-year-olds to school “Planet Claire” popped up randomly on my shuffled USB stick (first time they heard it). I love playing fun songs for my kids and while this didn’t have the shocking look that “Rock Lobster” put on their faces earlier this summer, I could tell they were having fun with the lyrics. I’m going to have to show them that sign and I’ll bet they get a good laugh.
Love it–hope they stay!
Maybe we could vote on them and nominate even more excerpts.
In the late 80’s, PC was a late night cruising song for us.
I am still trying to find a sign with REM lyrics … maybe a sign that just says “… LEO NARD BERN STEIN …” ? 🙂
Check out my eye on the street from yesterday.
I could not read the lyrics on it (resolution of photo).
And yet stupid me walked by that sign twice going in/out of Sherlocks yesterday on a beer run, and failed to look up and read it … thanks for the pointer!
Oooh, I love the B 52’s. I saw them in concert once when I was in high school. They were touring with The Pretenders. My best friend and I got all dressed up in vintage duds from Stefan’s. Big, crazy bouffant wigs too. Got there, and no one else was dressed up. Made it really easy to find each other in Lakewood.
