  1. Granted, my research is no more scientific than the online poll cited in the Decaturish article, but every person I’ve talked with while sidled up to a bar says there’s no way they will vote for a 2 to 3 mil increase. And several of them have kids in the system.

What happens when the referendum fails? It is the responsibility of the school board to give a reasonable accounting of that option other than “Be afraid!”

    1. I still feel like this snuck up on us. The narrative changed so abruptly around a year ago. We slowly evolved from enrollment is declining (with a bit of back and forth on where it was really heading) to our schools are growing due to our success to a more abrupt warning of DISASTER APPROACHING. Still don’t feel like I understand what the true awareness and conversations at the City and CSD level have been along the way.

For the public to vote intelligently, I think we need to understand how we as a city and school system got to this point. Otherwise, it will be hard for many to trust the data and arguments put forward for the referendum, no matter how sound they are.

      1. The Decatur WE know is hyper-informed and engaged. They check out DM and Decaturish daily and brag about the school system’s rankings. Those people post here and answer on-line surveys.

The rest of the population, and I daresay it is the majority, knows that it is already paying one of the highest property tax rates in the state and will not ask a lot of questions before simply saying “no” to a significant increase. The school board has not heard from them, and they won’t until it’s too late.

Does anyone remember when the transit funding vote was supposed to be close? You all saw how that turned out.

  2. Most of the complaints about Krog St. Market being too popular are whining about parking. We recently visited Superica (which is wonderful) and Gu’s Dumplings after walking from midtown via the Beltline. What a pleasure it was to enjoy a nice walk and arrive at a fun destination. I’m sure the same would also be true if we had cycled the Beltline . And if someone can’t walk or bike or are too lazy to do so, there are other options besides driving and parking.
