UPDATE: Here are a couple of other photos of the turkey as it roamed downtown Decatur today.   The first is from Nicola and the second is from Gwyneth via Barb.

Maybe they read the recent review in the New York Times and wanted to get a closer look?

We’ve received a couple of pics over the last 24 hours of a wild turkey wandering along – and in – the streets of Decatur.  Alex sent in the pic above yesterday and reported a turkey sighting at the intersection of Commerce/Columbia and College.

Also just now, Gwyneth reported that the turkey is downtown at the intersection of West Ponce and Marshall Street and that police are trying to keep him/her out of the street.

  1. As a lover of Bourbon, that headline is just plain cruel. I truly did not expect it to be an actual wild turkey. That said, it made for a heady mixture of (and quick transition between) excitement, confusion, and disappointment.

  2. Love these guys! The turkeys frequent the area around the Methodist Children’s Home. I’ve seen them on Derrydown and Katie Kerr. Last fall I saw an entire family of turkeys eating acorns in the middle of the road in Winnona Park. They seem totally unafraid of humans and cars.

  3. Being that is turkey breeding season and the hens are looking for mates I am not surprised to see her. We saw 4 hens in Avondale by Sams Crossing a few months ago.

  4. The bottom photo looks like a good old fashioned wild west show down about to happen!

  5. I saw three of them on Pinehill Rd near Columbia Drive and Peachcrest over the Christmas holidays.

  6. The turkey has been hanging out on Oakland Street and Northern Ave all afternoon.

  7. I have missed the Decatur turkeys that use to hang out in Westchester Hills – have not seen them in several years. So glad they are back!

  8. I heard they bought an expensive craftsman style house in WP because of the school districts…but are now worried about over crowding…
