Am I alone in thinking that discussing a horrible crime like the one that took place in downtown Decatur is precisely the kind of thing that a community blog like this is for? To comfort the community? To discuss safety? To just have a community outlet to talk this out and hopefully sooth some heartbreak/fear/emotion? There are a lot of people really quite emotionally affected by this, and I thought a community blog would be a place people can go and discuss those fears, etc. I find that not having any voice/discussion on this blog is really unfortunate and disheartening.

        I’m with you Walrus.

Not to minimize the crimes, but we seem to have had a lot of conversation surrounding iPhone snatches, house burglaries, etc. I would have thought now more than ever we would come together as a community to offer condolences, brainstorm ideas for improvements, and maybe even organize an event to take a moment and show the victim’s family our community is saddened.

        But, great photo Rodney!

I appreciate the comment, Walrus. I’ve been wrestling with how to walk the line between respecting the victim and serving the community. I’ve put up a post this morning that shouldn’t attract too much outside traffic – there aren’t any keywords related to the specific crime – but is there for the community to discuss all that’s happened.

Really appreciate it. I completely understand why you would be wrestling with it.

Interestingly, and unless I am mistaken, the last time our City had a murder inside the limits occurred in the neighborhood of this photo.

Not sure it was the last one, but yes.

No the last murder inside CoD was not in this neighborhood, it was in Oct 2013 and across E. College Ave in Oakhurst. I believe the assailant was the troubled grandson of the victim.

Let’s not spread rumor and misinformation and read more into the photo. This is a good picture taken by Rodney. I’m not sure why DM chose to post it now since it was taken at least a few weeks ago.

Wasn’t the intention at all. It’s a lovely photo and I felt we could benefit a bit from it during this difficult time. As for it being a couple of weeks old, Eye on the Street photos aren’t always posted immediately.

Lay off DM, he meant well. Blame Rodney, he’s the real troublemaker. I bet he even took this photo on the way to Trackside to cause even more trouble!

Thanks for the clarification. I guess my qualification of “unless I am mistaken” didn’t keep me from rumor spreading?
