New Decatur Grindhouse Burger Location Was Once Home of a Burger Chef

Chris sends in this photo – courtesy of Eddie Fowlkes – of a women’s men’s soccer game back in 1978 with the Burger Chef that once sat along North McDonough Street in the background.  Grindhouse Burger is currently planning to build a new Atlanta location on the same spot.

Eddie also sent along this example pic of a typical Burger Chef.

    Thanks Chris and Eddie!

So, should we expect a Don Draper/Peggy Olsen inspired booth in the new digs?

And will it be a clean, well-lighted place?

Wow. You have to be REALLY old to remember the Burger Chef. I’m just regular old, not old old, but I do miss my Hardee’s…

Great photos and thanks Chris. There is something historically balanced about the idea of a burger joint re-occupying that spot. Hey, you don’t have to be that old to remember burger chef! I miss Hardee’s breakfast biscuits!

Just as long as it wasn’t an Indian burial ground.

As I understand it, Grindhouse will be moving the headstones but will not be moving the bodies.

No the ancient native burial ground is under Chick Fila so we are all clear there! I wasn’t even thinking about the ironic adjacency issue between the two restaurants…it’s gonna be a chicken/cow fight!

Based on the lack of signage on the building in the background, it looks like it was closed by 1978.

Women playing soccer! Showing their femine knees and skin! In PUBLIC! Clearly this was the start of the decline of civilized society as we know it. No wonder we have chaos in the streets today and we are a largely Democrat voting unit. Tut tut!

We clutched our pearls too soon–apparently, those were actually men. 😀

Speaking of restaurants, what is happening at the old Maddie’s Ribs and Blues location on Scott up near Medlock Gulf and the Walmart site? There is a construction (?) trailer and they are tearing up the front porch decks. Anybody know what’s happening?

at one point it was going to be a Meehan’s. maybe they finally got around to starting on that now that WalMart construction has started as well.

      I think those are boys.

If not, the Dorothy Hamill haircut must have been very popular in Decatur.

My hair and that of all my friends was just like that in ’78.

Are you a girl or a boy? Anyway, those are boys–half of their shoelaces are untied. Plus, I don’t think that there was a whole lot of girls soccer back in 1978, especially not in public schools.

All the boys had longish hair back then. It was all started by the Beatles. If it was girls, the hair would be all the way down their back, nearly waist length.
