Decatur To Start Installing Colorful New Crosswalks Downtown This Week
Decatur Metro | January 10, 2017 | 3:22 pmFrom the City’s Extreme Makeover website…
Bright, unique, decorative designs will be installed on the City’s new downtown crosswalks (see them mapped here) starting Thursday, January 12. The work will start at the new raised crosswalk in the 200 block of East Ponce de Leon Avenue and will proceed to the west, with the new speed table at Ponce de Leon and Clairemont Avenue being done last. One additional crosswalk will be located in the 100 block of East Trinity Place.
The site goes on to say that the project will take 7-10 days, weather permitting. “Limited two-way traffic will be maintained at each installation site through the use of flaggers, but drivers should expect delays during the work.”
I was hoping for something a little more classy. It is hoped that the government rectifies the way it is going with street design before it is too late.
“Classy” is a highly subjective term. Plus, how classy do you want a crosswalk to be? It’s a crosswalk.
If Vivaldi ain’t playin’, I ain’t crossin’.
About time!! Lived @ drc 10 yrs & was almost run over daily. Along with the blind disabled infirmed & a host of others.
Did Chik-fil-A pay the city for that crosswalk endorsement?
Great idea. Crosswalks with advertisements! All proceeds benefit pedestrian infrastucture in the city!
Oh man, people would be annoyed by that.
“Oh man, people would be annoyed by that”
at least until their taxes went down. Why not have a few artistic crosswalks and a few that look like a NASCAR? A crosswalk covered with STP and Interstate Batteries stickers would be just as colorful. Just think of it as our own version of pop art.
The more important question is whether those chickens believe in marriage equality.
I like these. I think the novelty will result in drivers slowing down, if for no other reason than to see what the crosswalk is, and in pedestrians using the crosswalks instead of jaywalking. It’s ok to have fun while obeying traffic laws.
Agree, though I’ve seen better designs for slowing traffic (not as colorful though).

Ooooh! Optical illusions! I love the idea of CSD getting into the mirage business. It so fits our current era.
Perpetual construction has that same effect on traffic. 😉
If some white paint is left over the Sharrows on East Ponce de Leon entering the City could use a touch-up…
I still don’t understand why the crosswalks can’t be elevated a few inches to act as traffic calming devices. I’ve seen this done in several municipalities.
Several of the new ones are, if you take a look.
If you driver over the new raised crosswalk on E Ponce (bw Candler and Church) or the mega-thing at Ponce and Clairemont — they feel like they will send your car airborn at any speed over 10 mph. I was surprised the first time I drove over it. I noticed the city recently put up a “BUMP” sign to warn cars.
Yeah, the one at Clairemont is somewhat hidden if you’re coming up the hill on W Ponce. Sort of fun to watch.
that’s probably an intended feature to draw in more movie production. nothing like an airborne muscle car to spice things up.
I wish they didn’t tell them there was a bump then they would start driving slower. We have a hard time trying to get across that walk as it is. It took us forever just to get them to put the yellow sign up.
