  1. Where I get my hair cut would not qualify as a deal but my son swears by Cut Zoo which is between Chocolate and Rainbow Grocery at N. Decatur and Clairemont. He specifically likes Rose, but she doesn’t work every day, and I’m not sure she’s still there at all. It’s something like $12.00 for a simple men/boys haircut and $11.25 if you pay in cash.

    1. Rose is great…probably one of the hardest working folks in the biz. Cut-Zoo on the other hand is pretty dumpy and could seriously be a candidate for a Tabitha intervention…how many salons store unused flooring in their waiting rooms?

      1. I’m pretty sure the plan is to install that flooring in the shop (if you look, there is no flooring in that waiting room area). I can say conservatively those boxes of flooring have been sitting there for 10+ years. How’s that for procrastination? Even I can’t compete.

  2. Both of my sons and my other half go to Maxim Barber on Ponce in the square. They charge $20 for a really great cut including a neck shave(if requested) and a shampoo. Clean fades every time. Super friendly service!

  3. The easy answer for guys haircuts is Maxim Barbers downtown Decatur on Ponce. First class all the way and not terribly expensive. You pay a little bit more than you would across the street at Great Clips but for the quality and the experience you get, you come out way ahead.

      1. Yeah, you have to get there early. They’ve extended their hours and open at 9am, and if you get there at that point there’s no wait.

  4. I question whether we really want to discuss “the best deal” for a haircut. It reminds me of my mom, who would perpetually come home from the Cost Cutters crying because she hated her hair, but loved the low, low price. Now, you too can hate your haircut but love that you paid so little for it!

    1. Don’t know about men’s cuts, but in the world of women’s haircuts and color, there is not a clear relationship between price and whether you like the result. I’ve been to places/stylists that other women swore by and/or that cost a fortunate and ended up terribly unhappy. When I find a stylist that works for me, I hang on to that person even if they move all over the metro area. The reason that cut-rate (pun intended) salons don’t work for many is that you can’t count on getting the stylist you like even if you find one. Having said that, my son truly prefers Cut Zoo’s $11.25 haircuts by Rose over haircuts he’s gotten elsewhere for more money; she’s been cutting his hair since he was three.

My wife is the same way. She’s tried highly recommended places in Decatur, but is never happy, so she keeps making the trip to the Forum on a regular basis (and spending what seems to me a crazy amount of money).

  5. i have a large, oddly shaped head and thick hair, so I have to spend money for a good haircut. Wish i didn’t.

  6. I head to Maxim’s every once a while, like before a special event or something, but I have to admit to being a total cheapskate when it comes to haircuts. Most of the time it’s Great Clips for me. I like that I can check in with their nifty app.
My wife, however, totally offsets my frugality here; she’s been going to a fru-fru place at The Forum in Peachtree Corners for years.

  7. Our daughter gets her hair cut by Angelene at Salon Red Kids. She’s a senior stylist so it costs a little more, but she does such a great job that we can go longer between cuts and thus I think we save money overall.

  8. The boys at Peachtree Battle Barbershop include a neck shave, some old-school barbershop conversation and ambience with their $17 haircut. Of course, you have to trek over to Buckhead for that deal.

  9. I have been to a lot and I am still looking for the right place. I used to get hair cut, clean up my ears, eyebrows and neck line for $17. Maxim Barbers did get the job done right but they charge too much ($35).

    1. A haircut at Maxim Barbers with a complimentary shampoo and parking is $20 and $25 with a neck shave. That’s the price it’s been for the past 4 years.

  10. Akem at Salon Red (Kids on fridays) is top notch. She knows what to do with all types of hair and gives the freshest of fades.

  11. Emory Haircutters at 1248 Clairmont Road (on the left just before the North Decatur Road light) offers a great $17 men’s haircut. Mark will cut your hair to your specifications. I tried places ranging from $15 to $45 but my wife agrees this is the best yet. Plus it is a couple of doors down from Taps Craft Beers so I can get my growlers filled in the same trip.

  12. Can’t go wrong with Sophia at Salon Marsof in the building between Cafe Lily and Big Tex. Just the best!

  13. I’ve been going to Cynthia Morris, Studio C, on Pharr Road in Buckhead since 1996. It’s a one-chair solo shop, not a glitzy salon. Prices are a lot higher than Rose at Cut Zoo — stylist of choice for my husband and son. But Cynthia spends an entire hour getting it just exactly right every time.

  14. I can’t believe I’m the only one admitting they do a home cut. Not all the time, but enough to get me a couple of extra months in between professional cuts. I’ve gotten pretty good at my swoop bangs. Thanks youtube!

    1. You’re not the only one. I’ve got a $40 set of clippers I’ve used for the past 4 years. For the money, FTW!

  15. After years of horrible haircuts and me getting getting furious at his old barber, my husband finally found Maxim. They do a fantastic job styling his thick hair so the cut grows out nicely. He ends up needing less haircuts and looks sexy longer, pays $25.

  16. Real Salon on East Ponce between Sam’s Crossing and Dekalb Industrial. My family all see Marty but I’ve heard nothing but good things about the rest of the staff.

  17. I usually take my kids to super cuts on Ponce. Although we’ve been to Rose at Cut Zoo over the years as well. Great Clips on Lawrenceville Hwy does a good job on the cheap as well.
For me, I prefer Lee Cobb at the Kroger shopping center on DeKalb Ind.

  18. For men…it begins and ends with Maxim. Local people, great haircuts, good prices…what more do you need?
