    PHOTOS: 2014 Decatur Beer Festival

    Decatur Metro | October 19, 2014 | 10:45 am

Here are your requisite Decatur Beer Festival crowd photos.  Especially appreciated and enjoyed the extensive Georgia section up on the MARTA plaza this year.

Thought the selection of Georgia brews was outstanding and in general the crowd seem older and not as drunk by the end of the day. Though that could just be my warped sense of reality. I liked the second band too. The VIP section was awesome. Giving you a break from the crowds & sun among other things. But the best part of the VIP area is that it raised a bunch of money that can now be donated!

I’ve been working on the Decatur High Booster Club food crew for 15 years or so. Would agree there were far fewer sloppy drunks than some past festivals and it looked like everbody had a great time. Can’t say much about the beer since we were busy cooking, but them were some darn good bratwurst sold under the DBB tent. This is the end of the Doug Aholt Era for this DBB fund raiser (his youngest has graduated college, so it’s past time). Doug has done an outstanding job turning this into the single biggest DBB fund raising event. Rob Pope is taking over next year with plans to take it to the next level.

Love those brats. Well done guys.

Rob Pope is the best! Could we please elect him to the School Board? 🙂

I couldn’t make it to the Festival (sigh) but it sounds like it was a great time. The real question – was there a beer that really stood out? (assuming you remember)

I tried Orpheus and really liked it.

Outside my affection for our local “Big 3,” Orpheus is the local brewery I’m loving most consistently. Great stuff.

Creature Comforts is quite solid too.

Agreed. Tropicalia is the best new beer I have tried this year. Wild Heaven’s White Blackbird is second.

Wait, the Big 3 are Sweetwater and….?

Super-local Big 3: Three Taverns, Wild Heaven and Blue Tarp.

Enjoyed the local and hyper-locals but have to say my overall favorites were the Cherry Street Brewing Co-op samples. From Cumming, for crying out loud. Their coconut porter was not only the best beer that initially sounded disgusting, it was actually the best thing I tasted all day.

                  “coconut porter”?
did they put a paper umbrella in it for you?

It sounded silly to me, too, but it was damn good.

+1. Coconut porter was a damn good porter. I think putting coconut in the title over does it.

My biased review of DBF and my favorites.

Their co-op status clearly appealed to your socialist leanings. Drink up, comrade!

Exactly. They need to distill some vodka!

                Gotcha.

Also, it may have just been me, but I caught a pretty heavy whiff of pot a couple of times at the festival.

I mean, I’m all for legalization and decriminalization, but damn, at the beer festival?

I’m biased because I was volunteer-pouring for them but Red Hare Brewery (out of Marietta) had some really great beer. Two big hits – a fresh hopped IPA that was really popular and my favorite, the Sticky Stout. Also, who doesn’t love a brewery that makes Watership Brown Ale?

Thanks for all of the suggestions. Looks like I have some beers to try – starting with that coconut porter cuz, well, what pirate doesn’t like coconuts? Cheers!

I enjoyed talking to the team from Second Self Brewery. They just opened in West Midtown and this was their first beer festival. Their beers seem to be well thought out to meet current trends and were very tasty. They had a great session beer, as did many brewers. I think some of the most interesting new beers are the lower alcohol sessions – particularly the ones with citra hops.
